Liberals, Democrats, Progressives....Have you armed yourselves?

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by NancyBlueINOklahoma (a host of the Editorials & Other Articles group).

Yes, a controversial question, but one that must be asked. I used to live in rural America, owned guns, hunted with my friends and neighbors. It's been some 19 years since I have owned a gun of any kind, selling my guns and rifles when I moved from the Midwest to the New York area.

Looking back on those days, remembering the huge number of guns, remembering the thousands of rounds of ammo that almost all my neighbors had, realizing most of them probably voted for Trump in this past election I realized just how out gunned we are on the so called left. If there is a civil war, or significant civil unrest, most of us could not defend ourselves.

As much as I don't like the thought of having a gun in my home, I am finding myself asking myself almost daily, "Is it time that I exercise my own 2nd Amendment Right" to own and bear arms...are we reaching a point in our American history where owning a gun for personal safety is an imperiative not to be ignored?

I understand why someone would. I have close friends who haven't owned or shot guns in years who given current circumstances have bought guns and are going to the shooting range. I do get it.

But not for me. I don't like guns, I don't really feel they make you safer, i have a young niece and youngish nephew who I would be concerned might find it. I don't think it's the right answer for me.

and am still on the fence here.

Even though I live in NY (state) there are a surprising number of folks in my town who voted for, and are rabidly supportive of Donald J. Trump, and they know that I am not. That is a bit scary.

Violence isn't the answer to our nation's current problem. We've got to be better than the morans.

but I do believe in self-protection, and like it or not, a cardboard protest sign is not going to stop an angry redneck's bullet.

I wrote a long post in reply, but what it boils down to is this: I'm not going to arm myself with lethal weapons. If someone assaults me I'll cheerfully hit them back. But that's it.

If some Trump supporter decides to shoot me, sure, I'll be pretty irritated (maybe not for long)! But it will just underline their hate. I refuse to become like them, and live in such fear of others that I feel the need to carry a gun.

I've always been very pro-second amendment rights. I've also had concerns about how the so-called left seems so severely outgunned. Just another area where we probably need to grow more of a backbone. Not that I'm supporting the use of violence as anything other than a last resort, but when last resort comes, will we be ready to defend? Being able to defend against an oppressive government is reason why we have a 2nd amendment in the first place.

I also have an expectation that it will be Trump and the GOP who will ultimately strive to disarm the population once more of their fascist plans are pushed through, so those single-issue Republican voters who voted solely because of guns are likely to be disappointed. (Unless of course we the people are able to put a halt to the insanity before we reach that point.)

I'd not resist arrest, and roll the dice in a court of law. Been a law abiding citizen my whole life. I am though worried about some Trump supporters who have already verbally accosted me in the street over my views.
