Trump Supporters Have Discovered The DUP And Its Just The Absolute Worst
(Note...the Democratic Unionist Party, or DUP-a party almost no one in the States had hear of prior to this year's election, unless you happened to be in the habit of hanging out in pro-IRA pubs in Boston, New York or San Francisco-is the minor party which has pledged to keep the minority Conservative Party government in power, at least for the time being).
Theresa May, the Conservative prime minister who once said Tories should stop being the "nasty party", announced on Friday that she plans to govern by working with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party following her failure to win a majority in the UK election.
May's statement sparked fury as the DUP are known for an aggressively socially conservative agenda, and have fiercely opposed LGBT rights, including blocking votes on same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland and have been stringently anti-abortion rights even in the case of rape. Some members have also supported creationism and denied climate change.
News of a possible coalition between DUP and the Conservatives lit up 4chan's /pol/ messageboard Friday morning.
There's about a dozen active threads about DUP currently on 4chan. Most are very small, mainly with one or two users teaching American users about how DUP aligns politically within UK politics.

(and yes...if you went to the link, you DID see "Pepe the Frog" in the colors of the Ulster flag-the banner Ulster Loyalists-violent far-right pro-British and anti-Irish bigots fly as a expression of both Protestant supremacism and hatred.)

(100 posts)Very few people on the mainland have the slightest interest in Northern Ireland unless the IRA is bombing us. I wasn't really aware of the main party, the Ulster Unionists (Protestant and very pro-UK) which had an influence on the Conservatives since the country became independent. These Neantherthal Democratic Unionists are just a pretty nasty party in its views, similar to Sinn Fein, but ultra-Protestant rather than Roman Catholic
Can't even be bothered to look at the main parties on Google. Northern Ireland politics stay in Northern Ireland; they don't even have the same parties as the rest of the UK; this is why May is making a big big mistake in aligning herself to this party. Plus it is likely to really piss off the other parties over there. The Nasty Party meets the Nasty Party (NI). Wonderful. Especially since the country is really divided (not as bad as the Trump/Sane split in the US.) and we are going into serious negotiations next week.
I think the English invented the word 'omnishambles'. For a situation much less important than this Brexit nonsense.
Please don't bother criticizing the above views. I know they are ridiculously superficial and near Rant-worthy. I am saying that most English people feel this way but they are my opinion only. I seem to know more than most about UK/Irish politics, but a tiny fraction of what most Irish people know.
The main analogy I can think of is the divide between the Southern States and the Northern States before this hyper-partisanship became ultra important and - of course - before the rise of Donald. Or the divide between the Godless Cities and strong US Evangelicals.
The UK is losing Religion, a goodly part of Ulster is reliant on tribes and religion.

(100 posts)Thanks - had some horrible vision of Breitbart taking my views up and me becoming some global hate figure, trolled by all Ireland and all US people claiming ancient Irish descent - one thing is the power of the past - nationalism is very strong in countries like Serbia or Ireland, or even the South US reliving the Civil War.
Here even - in the UK -in reference to Ireland, nobody remembers what The Troubles were, even though it was just a generation ago. Even in N Ireland it is the distant past, but there, the difference is that it is just buried and can be dug up and the intensity would be as bad as ever it was. One reason why that stupid May woman should keep out of any Ulster affairs; this Brexit business could - not will - bring the whole past back, both in taking one Party's side and regarding the borders.
Some cliche regarding 'Sowing the Wind and Reaping The Whirlwind' is facile, but it is once more on the table.

(100 posts)The mindset of most (sorry - generalisation, again) voters in this province is TOTALLY different from your average UK citizen, it is not just the accent. One theory I have is that, back in the past, the immigrants from the UK had a much bigger proportion of people from both Ireland and Scotland, and their strong views were in part to blame for the stupid US religious fundamentalism and sectarianism.
These took root and it is one reason there are so many strong views and (as a result) so many sects and so much hatred of other groups, whether they're black or jewish or Democrat.
All these proud Republicans were poor starving immigrants once (Donald's mother was Scottish?) and the one thing that allows this to continue is a whole city/county/state that shares your opinion. Some sort of perverse group-think.
There is a lot in common between the Bible Belt and the back streets of Belfast.
Just a tangled personal view on my part.
And - of course - there is racism and the Civil War and a hundred other little things to consider. May is already distrusted over there just because she is English and posh-ish, but to align herself so publicly to the DUP is unwise. To put it mildly.
