Progressives are stumped. They are asking these questions over and over
and over again on social media, TV, and radio:
1) Why dont Trump supporters turn against Trump even though he is doing things that hurt them? (like taking away their healthcare)
2) Why do Republicans hate the Affordable Care Act, and why are they so transparently acting to give wealthy people a tax break by making healthcare unaffordable?
Here is the short answer: All politics is moral. Supporting Trump and gutting public healthcare resources in order to provide tax cuts for the wealthy fits perfectly within the strict conservative moral worldview, which is hierarchical in nature. Voters dont vote their self-interest. They vote their values.
Once you understand the conservative moral hierarchy, the reasons for their opposition to good public programs becomes more apparent.

(2,034 posts)If It was called Romneycare, they would be applauding it for being "a sound free market solution" (specially if the dems stuck with single payer like they should have).
Their Obamacare meltdown is due to the resentment of the party chiefs against O, their greed and the ignorance of their mushroom-headed base (people who are kept in the dark and fed a steady diet of bs)

(7,990 posts)for the country, Trump supporters want the opposite. ACA is just one example of a basically Republican plan that Republicans learned to hate. Perhaps we should use reverse psychology?

(562 posts)Here's a compromise - Dems agree to vote to implement Trumpcare in solid red states in exchange for keeping and making improvements to ACA in blue and swing states.
Dems then sell Trumpcare in red states. Pelosi and Obama relentlessly push its adoption, tell red staters they'll do much better without medicaid, and medicare and social security too.
Liberals won't - in fact they'll keep theirs and add Red Staters benefits, doubling their benefits. They need to - liberals are lazy socialists who despise free market freedoms.
Only red staters have the balls to live with no insurance or government handouts.

(22,441 posts)they will vote against the ones who are taking their hard earned money away.
The DNC needs to hammer this home. They need to show people just how horrible the GOP is, like how under Obama they blocked every single jobs bill, including a veterans jobs bill.
If they are given specific information about how their "people" actually vote they may not be so inclined to support them

(110,901 posts)1. That hasn't happened yet. They found the ACA Byzantine, to say the least, so if they get something simpler they'll be happy, even if it doesn't cover them. Until they get sick.
2. Because it was named for a black man in the White House. I don't think you can overestimate just how pissed off the American suburban bigot was about that. They also think Obamacare means a Medicaid giveaway to the black and the shiftless (both together in their minds) but the part called the ACA was for hard working suburban white folks like them. They're in for a big surprise on that one.
And yes, they think the plutocrats should keep all of "their" money, never mind the money was taken from people who work for a living over the last 45 years. They never could manage math.
I'm afraid they'll continue to get defensive about their voting choice until that brick wall finally falls on them. It's coming. We know it, they don't. Unfortunately, a lot of people will be buried, literally as well as figuratively, before they finally catch on.

(12,538 posts)People buy into this fantasy. Watch how much time television newscasts spend on how to handle the huge amount of money you'll get when you win the lottery. Should you take the lump sum or the annual payments? This happens when the lottery passes $500,000.
You have a better chance of being killed by lightning during a terrorist attack during halftime at the Super Bowl than winning the lottery, but people vote for the GOP because they know they'll pay less taxes on their winnings if the Republicans are in charge.
Oh, yes, and then there's that whole abortion thing...

(562 posts)I've read a lot of theories. I don't think there's a simple answer.
Conservatives with strict dads exist all over Europe, etc. Why didn't Canada elect a megalomaniac?
Racism is a big factor IMHO, but why the hatred toward Hillary Clinton? Sexism?
John Kerry lost. White rich guy. Two huge pluses in this article. But He lost by a large margin.
Could just plain selfishness and lack of empathy and connection to fellow Americans be a major cause?
Are we greatly undervaluing Trump's specific talents at psychological manipulation of a certain audience and charisma? His anger empowers them. Its a rush. There's a magnetism there not uncommon with narcissists. He easily won the Republican nomination.

(14,543 posts)they were lost LONG before he came down the escalator.
Over a quarter century of having their head shrunk by AM radio, then the internet with the nexis being the active hate framing of the word "liberal."
45 is a high level con man, he would put his name on dog shit if he could turn a buck selling it.
Being a predator he saw an audience that was primed, conservatism had sucked the soul out of 1/3 of this country and all he had to do was be himself.
I told people when he came down the escalator that he was a big threat to win the nomination because he was the embodiement of what conservatism had devolved into.
It isn't "simple," but it is pretty clear - a big portion of this country being inundated with propoganda that simultaneously told them they were victims at the same time they were great, patriotic christians - deluding them into thinking they were super special and morally superior at the same time targeting their hatred at the evil liberal boogyman.
THAT is the what the conservative party now stands for. They have no real objective outside of tax cuts, they just sit around in a frenzy over how they can get over on the liberals.
We are in a REALLY bad spot, but there is no chance to win going after 45. Two years now it has been this endless, THIS WILL BE THE END OF HIM! But, we sit here today ...
All pointing how big of a POS he is does is calcify their support of him AND keep the scumbag republicans out out of the line of fire.
The energy needs to be aimed at conservatism in general and republican elected officials other than 45.

(562 posts)And I point out Michael Moore predicted Trump's victory and was dead on.
[link:https://michaelmoore.com/trumpwillwin/|
Trump is a potent combination of seasoned actor, charismatic demagogue, mass marketer, and ruthless sociopath. People like that are prone to attract a loyal following.
But its the GOP that keeps him in power. And based on Moore's opinion, the Dems do not consistently communicate a populist message, which is Trump's achilles heel.
