We Need One Sane Leader in the U.S.North Korea Standoff. Pressures on You, Kim Jong-un.
The startling realization for Americans is that, between President Trump and Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader is probably the more predictable of the two. When a small, weak nation threatens to drown its enemies in a sea of fire, its a signal to rivals that the consequences of attacking Pyongyang could be dire for them. When the leader of the worlds most powerful country uses the same type of rhetoric, its harder to interpret.

Republicans spent much of Barack Obamas second term pillorying him (with some justification) for drawing a red line for Bashar al-Assadthreatening to use force if the Syrian leader used chemical weaponsthat he never actually intended to enforce. Trump, on the other hand, draws red lines like a kid set loose with a crayon on an Applebees place mat, threatening rivals from Mexico to China to congressional Democrats with dire consequences that rarely materialize. Trump promised in January that a North Korean nuke capable of striking the U.S. wont happen. Such a weapon now either currently exists or will very soon.

(100 posts)Just a year ago or 6 months ago or 3 months ago (amnesia seems to have clouded the US mind for any longer. For the masses anyway, it seems) the world would have laughed in disbelief that the President of the Free World should be compared to this total fruitcake, and compared unfavourably.
Not even Mad Magazine or The Onion would have dared to put it even on the bottom of page 17.
Now it can be blazed on the NYT or WP and seen as a serious topic.
Even Yeltsin at his worst (remember when he started conducting his welcoming Military Band when he staggered out of that aeroplane after many hours, with a massive hangover) did not provoke that degree of revulsion and embarrassment at How A Major Country Can Fail.
And he had a worthy past and knew what he was talking about most of the time.
Worse than Sad.
