Pence hires veteran campaign operative in latest sign he’s preparing White House run

Mike Pence’s communication team is going to have to do a lot more spinning in coming days as it becomes increasingly clear the vice president is making all the needed moves to position himself for a possible 2020 White House run if Donald Trump isn’t able to.

The latest piece in that shadow campaign puzzle comes in the form of Pence hiring Nick Ayers as his new chief of staff. Ayers is a campaign operative who has never worked in the federal government before.

Ayers “replaced Josh Pitcock, the long-serving Pence aide distinguished by his quiet and inoffensive manner,” Politico reports. “Ayers is around to ensure that if Trump is out of the picture for one reason or another his man will be ready.” Two White House officials told Politico that Ayers has been “quietly warning” Pence for months “that Trump’s troubles could cause collateral damage and that he needed to take a more aggressive posture on a range of issues to ensure he enters the post-Trump era on solid ground.”

Meaning, Ayers isn’t the type of person you hire to make sure your office runs smoothly in its dedication to serving the president. Ayers is the type of person you hire to make sure you have a path to the Oval Office in 2020 while chaos envelopes the White House.

That seemed to be confirmed by Anthony Scaramucci, before he was let go as the White House’s communication director.

“Why do you think Nick’s there, bro?” Scaramucci told New Yorker writer Ryan Lizza in an interview last month, shortly before being fired. “Are you stupid? Why is Nick there? Nick’s there to protect the Vice-President because the Vice-President can’t believe what the f*ck is going on.”..........................

Mike Pence’s real power move

Amid White House staff changes, the vice president has replaced his long-serving chief of staff with sharp-elbowed political operative Nick Ayers.

The vice president’s office hasn’t been one of the competing power centers in President Donald Trump’s faction-riven White House — but the recent arrival of Nick Ayers, the veteran campaign operative now serving as Mike Pence’s chief of staff, is starting to change that.

Ayers’ hire, according to interviews with eight current and former administration officials, was less about a secret campaign to challenge Trump in 2020 and more about helping the vice president — who, at just 58, has a political future ahead of him in the post-Trump era — preserve his future political options, whatever they may be.

A veteran political operative, Ayers had for months been quietly warning the vice president that Trump’s troubles could cause collateral damage and that he needed to take a more aggressive posture on a range of issues to ensure he enters the post-Trump era on solid ground, according to two White House officials.

Ayers arrived in the West Wing as Reince Priebus, one of the few White House aides with Washington experience, was replaced as President Donald Trump’s chief of staff by retired Marine Gen. John Kelly. Ayers, a 34-year-old Georgia native, replaced Josh Pitcock, the long-serving Pence aide distinguished by his quiet and inoffensive manner. ...........................

Evangelicals and Congressional Republicans love the guy but that's where his support base ends. Pence can only win the 2020 nomination if he is the sitting president which would require 45 to resign, be removed or not run again. Our nominee in 2020 should be able to mop the floor with him if that's the case.

I think he'd spill the beans that Pence knew, as head of the transition team, that Flynn had ties to other countries.

Gotta think of some tweets to get Trump fired up! He *hated* the President Bannon meme.
