If Roy Moore Isn't Rock Bottom for Republicans, What the Hell Is?

When the news that Alabama Senate candidate and longtime conservative raconteur Roy Moore wasaccused of molesting a 14-year-old girl when he was 32, we braced for the inevitable pushback from those on the right who would defend him. Partisanship is a hell of a drug, one powerful enough to cause at least some supporters to turn a blind eye to carefully reported allegations of child abuse.

They did not disappoint. Led by the same cargo cult of alt-right types who argue it's no big deal that the Trump administration has more ties to Russia than the Bolshoi Ballet, conservatives tripped over themselves blaming the accusers or, unbelievably, arguing that his alleged actions amount to no big deal.

If this isn't rock bottom, pray that a comet hits Earth before we reach it.

Recalling the rabid anti-Russian attitudes held by Republicans throughout the Cold War era, it was a shock to the senses to see so many so-called conservatives excusing Trump's obvious blind spot toward Russian malfeasance. It was hard to digest. If we as Americans could agree on anything, it's that Russians are the Bad Guys. Doesn't anyone remember Rocky IV?

Failing that, we can at least agree that heavily sourced allegations of child molestation are disqualifying for a job in the United States Senate. Or so it seemed.

Political science has produced evidence since as early as the 1940s suggesting that partisanship is a powerful, stable force in an individual's political beliefs. We can overlook or excuse a lot of flaws in candidates who share our party label. Individual factors still matter, though. Certain people are unpleasant enough in their ideas, behavior or personality to preclude our support, even if they're on the "right" team.

1. I don't think there is a "rock bottom."

Every time we think they've gone as low as they possibly could, they go even lower.

14. I'm afraid I finally agree. Refusal to believe anything

negative about their party, actions or candidates, while believing anything bad about ours, pretty much eliminates a bottom.

Like the people who they they'd vote for a pedophile before a Democrat. That's how bad we are.

Nothing is.

7. Well, bare in mind that Kansas is about to replace Sam Brownback with Kris Kobach.

So, against all odds, they are actually about to find a way to sink lower.

That's no easy task when they already have the worst governor in America.

Then again, for Brownback to become the worst governor in America was no easy task either, given how fierce the competition is for the top spot.

12. You might enjoy this thread that I started two years ago.

It asked "who is the worst governor in the country?"

15. Kobach is lower than whale shit.

In my long life of observing political low life Kobach is the worst I've ever seen. He was handpicked by W which alone is enough to install W in the hall of shame. to kobach there are no facts just unrelenting zeal for his strange ideas. Of course, it might be an act because that craziness is how he managed to get where he is. In reality he is even worse than Moore and has done a lot more damge with his voter suppression strategy. He proves that the Repblicans are not a political party but a mob where loyalty is rewarded with wealth and power. The coup has already happened. Wait till the votes totals get rigged in the next lection and you will see what I mean.

10. murder?

Even so, I'm sure the evangelicals would come up with something like, "he needed to be killed".

Talk about relative morality or "situational ethics".

11. rock bottom? what is rock bottom?

Hmmm here is rock bottom..... "you got to grab them by the pussy", "look at him shaking all over" ( mimicking a disabled journalist)
"get em the hell out" (at every political rally he held), "they used to have the shit knocked out of them", "Clinton needs to be in jail", "Obama is not an American, I have people in Hawaii right now"....ETC ETC ETC

THERE IS YOUR ROCK BOTTOM... the leader of this country is the slimiest rock bottom this country has ever seen. That includes Joe McCarthy, Henry Clay, Huey Long, George Wallace, Pat Buchanan, etc, etc , etc
