Donald Trump Just Asked Congress to End the Rule of Law

This should be the biggest headline of the speech.

Source: Slate

Donald Trump’s first State of the Union was a deeply dangerous speech.

It was deeply dangerous because he finally followed in the footsteps of European leaders like Hungarian President Viktor Orban who have long ago learned to give an attractive look to authoritarian populism.

Like them, Trump eschewed openly racist remarks in his speech, even emphasizing how much he (supposedly) cares about the fate of Latinos and black Americans. Like them, he called for economic policies, like paid family leave, that would actually benefit ordinary people. And like them, he then cast himself as the only man willing to prioritize the interests of his supporters over those of foreigners and political elites.

It was Bannonism without Bannon’s penchant for shock and awe. And it played shockingly well.

But Trump’s speech was also deeply dangerous for an even more important reason: Under the cover of his soothing rhetoric about unity and bipartisanship, Trump called on Congress to give him unprecedented and unquestionably antidemocratic powers: “Tonight,” he said, “I call on the congress to empower every Cabinet secretary with the authority to reward good workers—and to remove federal employees who undermine the public trust or fail the American people.”

5. he's a puppet

He's spent a lifetime of being a bully and a con. Anything deeper than that comes from whoever pulls his strings.

3. Sounds like Drumpf wants a purge.

This is the type of thing his enablers have been groomed for.

8. Here we go again: McCarthyism 2.0. Soon Trump will sign his own version of EO 9835

"EO 9835 facilitated the establishment of the highly publicized "Attorney General's List of Subversive Organizations" (AGLOSO). Eventually, AGLOSO would become one of the central influences in the second American Red Scare, known collectively as McCarthyism. The list came into being after Truman signed EO 9835, both the order and AGLOSO established more than two years before Senator Joseph McCarthy's first allegations of Communist infiltration in the U.S. government in early 1950."

11. That's Joseph N. Welch on the left.

His famous quotation:
Senator, may we not drop this? We know he belonged to the Lawyers Guild ... Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator. You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?

21. Trump has no sense of decency.

And, apparently, that's why millions of Americans voted for him.

9. I'd love to hear endless round-tables about that.

About how he's calling for a purge of the federal government to get rid of long-time dedicated public servants who the far right have labeled the "deep state." About how he's trying to establish an authoritarian model of government while clearly sharing the views of those, like Richard Spencer, who are anxious to establish a "white ethno-state." About how he's already broken the law regarding Russian sanctions by going against the overwhelming majority of both Congress and the Senate.

Instead, are we just going to hear endless discussions about how he was able to read a teleprompter well enough that they can call him "Presidential?" How many times do we have to hear "He finally became the president tonight." before it actually happens?

Spoilers: It won't.

12. This is indeed a frightening statement- if you read between the lines

I'm afraid that a lot of people might hear this and have it seem to make sense on the surface. After all, why not reward "good workers" and get rid of "bad workers". Republicans have been using this to attack Teachers and Unions for years. However, for those of us whom are rightly suspicious of anything Trump/GOP says, here's what we are hearing:

"Good Workers"= Trump syncophants
"Bad Workers"= Everybody else, especially those with the spine to tell him "no".

Be afraid. Be very afraid.....

BTW was there a lot of applause to this line (for those watching)?

13. Loyalty oaths for Federal workers

coming next.

And in at least one agency, workers were given a list of 5 words that will be scanned for in emails, including dump and selection 2020 (read between the lines). Of course, shouldn't be political activity at work but the intent to intimidate is clear.

A nonpolitical civil service is a bulwark against fascism. If the cabal remains in power long enough, they will do to every Federal employee what they are doing to FBI agents--check all social media activity, etc.

Fascism 101.

And many Federal workers voted for the goon. No bueno.

18. "A nonpolitical civil service is a bulwark against fascism."

You are so right, and this is exactly why their push to politicize the civil service is so dangerous.

20. A simply amazing statement.

What the Orange Abomination was saying is that the administration should be able to fire any federal employee that is not sufficiently loyal to the OA - personally.

22. A return to bad old days of patronage

Before the professionalization (if that's a word) of the federal work force. We cannot return to those days. Federal workers, apart from appointees, are normally experts in their fields, whether they are lawyers, doctors and scientists at the CDC, biologists, engineers, computer scientists, etc. They have to be trusted to do their jobs and not have their work politicized or be trashed because they themselves may have political opinions contrary to the President. And their work has to be respected even if the results are contrary to what the Administration itself may want.

What Trump is calling for will have a chilling effect on all that work. And what will fill the gap? Partisan nonsense that will only serve to discredit the government (and all its various professions) in the eyes of people everywhere. This is incredibly damaging and among the worst things Trump is doing.
