No, Donald Trump didn't cancel funding for Barack Obama presidential library

By Amy Sherman on Monday, February 12th, 2018 at 10:56 a.m.

A viral story on Facebook says that President Donald Trump decided not to pay for Barack Obama’s presidential library, but no such thing happened.

Trump is "cancelling funding for Obama’s free house and library," the Jan. 17 headline on the Patriot Report said.

The story provides no evidence and contradicts actual information about how the Obama library will be funded. Facebook users flagged the post as being potentially fabricated, as part of the social network’s efforts to combat fake news.

The Patriot Report said that after Trump learned that Obama ordered the U.S. Education Department to divert more than $8 million to build the library, Trump rescinded the money and diverted it to privately held charter schools. Michelle Obama was going to get a private residence on the top floor, but Trump supposedly cancelled that, too.

4. Yes they are funded with private or at least non-Federal money.

Usually a foundation is formed and money is raised. The usual complaint is that foreign money is raised.

6. Later laws required libraries built , I believe, from Reagan forward to contribute to the cost of

maintenance. The contribution was 20% of the cost of construction for libraries up to 70,000 sq/ft. Square feet is not defined, so there is leeway. As the library grows above 70,000 sq/ft,the excess percentage is added to the 20 percent. I think this has been modified in the case of the last couple of libraries. This help defray the Federal cost on maintenance when the library is transferred to the National Archives and Records Administration. It also helps control the size of the library.

7. Well duh. The Patriot Report is not a news source. Could be a Russian fake news site.

Why do people fall for these kind of sites?
