At CNN Town Hall, Sen. Marco Rubio Declines To Say He Won't Take NRA Money

One week after the deadly shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla., that killed 17 people, lawmakers and a representative of the National Rifle Association faced tough questions from students, teachers and parents at a CNN town hall meeting to discuss how to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Florida Sens. Marco Rubio, a Republican, and Bill Nelson, a Democrat, and U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., started by answering parents and students at the event in Sunrise.

Rubio was the lone Republican lawmaker on the panel, as CNN's Jake Tapper said both President Trump and Florida Gov. Rick Scott declined invitations to attend.

Throughout the event, Rubio found himself in the hot seat, fielding the majority of the questions.

That is not accurate, NPR needs to do better headline writing. I heard Rubio defending himself for taking money from the NRA. insisting that it doesn't influence his policies or agenda. Which of course, no one should believe. Rubio is a compromised politician. Even if he may have a sliver of a conscience, he doesn't have enough integrity to say no to dirty money.

passionate gun rights people not just in Florida but in America against him. He could always replace NRA money with money from other donors, but the NRA might take very badly what refusing to take their money would say politically. In fact, it seems likely harsh, swift punishment would follow, to discourage others from following.

Rubio's term doesn't end until 2022, but he's working hard for 2018 to develop power within the party by helping elect people who will support him in congress, and by posing as a longed-for moderate voice and trying to develop wide electoral support. And of course after that comes 2020 and a new presidential election.
