Milbank: The kids are going to save us from ourselves
The kids have come to save us.
They have come from Florida, where their high school peers were gunned down on Valentines Day, inspiring them to organize Saturdays March for Our Lives.
They have also come from Minnesota, where my two teenage nephews boarded an overnight bus to Washington to participate in the march.
They have come by the hundreds of thousands to the capital, or to the streets of their home towns just as kids across the country, my daughter and her classmates among them, walked out of classes on March 14 to protest school shootings.
Most important, they are coming to the polls in November, the beginning of a generational wave that will upend our politics.
And they are going to get what they have come for.

God knows if many of the baby boomers (which I'm a member of) continue their ways the next generation will be left with a big pile of shit.

(51,584 posts)non commercialism and capitalism) baby boomers? They were against the corrupt, lying govt, into saving the earth, blacks and women's rights, free love, etc in the 60s and 70s.
My brother in law was always a Dem and is 72. He went to his high school reunion and now they only care about money, are in love with the GOP, etc. He doesn't understand when they sold out either. What happened to "corrupt" them?

(1,227 posts)I'm visiting my dad, and at 73 the kind, thoughtful person who taught me how to be a gentleman now speaks loads of ignorant and racist half-thoughts.
So, with all the crap I have to reconcile daily without him, I now have to muster tolerance of bigoted shit and disappointment in a man I once revered and simultaneously find a method to sleep every night.
But perhaps, just maybe, what I'm experiencing now is the frustration that pushes one into such a negative frame of view.
Dunno.

(2,004 posts)He needs to apologize and own his part in bringing this country to the the brink of disaster and his part in facilitating the NRA in perverting the political process of the United States.
Hopefully, Milbanks relatives have shamed him for being complicit in the destruction of the American experiment with democracy by the ownership class. Unfortunately, he will rationalize away his guilt and go back to spewing corporate swill when his kids go back to school and his nephews go home.
Milbank, will sellout, like so many baby boomers to make a living.

(2,004 posts)This is the problem with posting rather than talking, no one can see who you are. So I know a lot of boomers, the generation right before the boomers and a bunch of GenX who pulled up the ladder after themselves. They got theirs, the heck with everybody else.
I worked with a lot of boomers who got in good jobs right before everything hit the fan in the late 1970's and early 1980's who voted for Reagan and hated the thought of paying any taxes for schools, universities, health care, social safety net of any kind.and government regulatory functions while they, themselves, worked nice union protected government jobs. Those kind of leading edge boomers were incredibly self centered, as were the generation right before the boomers. I know one boomer who had a relative who worked at the Pentagon, got him a cushy post at the Pentagon during the height of the Viet Nam War. He votes reliably right wing, has a Nixon poster in his house. and votes against all the vets who need health care from the VA. That does not mean that all boomers were like that, but enough were and still are. Not everyone from our generation believed in a fair shake for everybody, especially for women and POC.
Sorry to make it sound like I blame all boomers, I do not, but by being unclear I made it sound that way. Like you guys, my SO and I have worked throughout our lives to leave the world a better place. We did not go for high pay, but did rewarding and important jobs with no recognition, because that status stuff was not important. Getting stuff done was what was important. Unfortunately, thanks to the easily propagandized and the incredibly selfish of all generations that vote to assuage easily manipulated feelings of entitlement, misogyny. and hate of anyone who is slightly different from themselves, we have all landed in this nightmare scenario.
The majority of my boomer friends and relatives who are the exact opposite of the selfish people I described earlier. You guys are correct for calling me out about not being clear. We still cannot out vote the selfish fools. Although, I maintain that here in Ohio, the election results were manipulated in favor of Trump. The lazy news media types(Milbank) all had their right wing talking points about HRC not campaigning in the right places, not likable enough(female). etc... already lined up to cover for the fact that the exit polls showed HRC winning Ohio, just like in 2004. I was in the campaign on the ground in a red area and HRC was winning enough to in a rural red areas to win the state, as the urban areas are very blue. Just explaining why the media types like Milbank, just set me off.
I maintain that Milbank is one of those selfish twits that I described. He got his and then promptly promoted right wing propaganda and outright lies as being the equivalent to actual facts. He and his brethren of "both sides are the same" own a lot of the problems this great country cannot solve. Gun violence being #1, by not calling out the NRA and their corporate masters for their lies.
We must keep fighting. I am calling my NRA owned congressman and senator today.
Thanks for listening.
