Dictatorship Was A 'Very Good' Period, Says Brazil's Aspiring President

July 30, 20182:51 PM ET

. . .

By tapping into that general disenchantment, Bolsonaro has advanced from the sidelines to center stage. Some compare his rise to that of Donald Trump, whom he much admires.

Bolsonaro is now considered a serious presidential contender, despite a heavily tainted record that includes telling a congresswoman in 2003 that she did not deserve to be raped by him.

He also once stated he'd be incapable of loving a gay son.

Last year, he caused an outcry by declaring that in his view the inhabitants of Afro-Brazilian communities known as quilombos are "not even good for breeding any more."

Particularly during their disastrous last 4 years in power, when the economy crashed under the weight of the dictatorship's massive, $100 billion foreign debt - the largest in the third world at the time.

But oh, that music....

As someone who hasn't learned Portuguese, it was great seeing the words on the screen, to be able to connect them with the words being sung.

Thank you for sharing this remarkable song, sandensea. Completely memorable.

Maria Creuza has always been my favorite Brazilian voice. The tune, of course, was one of Toquinho and Vinicius de Moraes' many collaborations.

That country has the best music, I think - but particularly from that era. A nice counterpoint to all the abuses, corruption, and crime.

Don't play it around Macri's favorite health "expert," Dr. Albino, though. Might upset the silly little man: https://www.democraticunderground.com/110862184

Thanks again for the comments. I take requests!

I've sen it in South America, and I've heard it was true in Italy after the war. "The trains ran on time." "The crime rate was much lower." But you'll find it was usually the upper class who benefited.

That's partly what got Macri elected in neighboring Argentina.

While a massive, Cambridge Analytica-aided smear campaign against his opponent might have pushed him over the top (he won narrowly), he did best among older voters for the very reasons you described.

Plus more than a little racism, since Argentina has become noticeably less "white" since the 1970s - something that angers a lot of older voters.

Macri was very good at dog-whistling at Archie Bunker voters (they've got them down there too), and even named his party after the last dictatorship (PRO - a nod to the Proceso, as that regime was known).

Well, they certainly got it: A massive debt crisis, deregulated utility rates (up 1000%+), and for seniors, cuts in pensions and health subsidies.

Macri glad-hands senior citizens during the 2015 campaign. He got 60% of their vote, and returned the favor by cutting cutting pensions and medical benefits.

- Africans handed over slaves, Bolsonaro says in TV interview
- Allegations of torture in dictatorship were mostly fabricated

Jair Bolsonaro, a favorite in the Brazilian presidential race, said his country owed blacks no debt because of slavery and pledged to cut back affirmative action policies.

"What debt of slavery? I never enslaved anyone in my life," the former Army captain said in an interview on TV Cultura late on Monday. "Look, if you really look at history, the Portuguese didn’t even step foot in Africa. The blacks themselves turned over the slaves.”

Under the leftist administrations of Presidents Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff, Brazil significantly stepped up university quotas for minorities and the poor, including for blacks.

Bolsonaro, who leads opinion polls that exclude the imprisoned Lula, said quotas are unfair and pit Brazilians against each other.
