George W. Bush Is Still Bad
On Thursday evening, just hours after Christine Blasey Fords gut-wrenching testimony about being sexually assaulted by Brett Kavanaugh, the Washington Post reported that a familiar face was lobbying Republican senators to forge ahead on the nominationformer president George W. Bush. In an interview with McKay Coppins of the Atlantic, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) confirmed that hed spoken with Bush about his vote:
Flake confirmed to me that George W. Bush called him and a number of his colleagues to lobby on behalf of Kavanaugh. https://t.co/7O6I4TnXdQ pic.twitter.com/aACSQRkHNm

The nations 43rd president left office nine years ago in the midst of the worst economic crisis of the last half century. His foreign policy agenda had resulted in a series of horrific, expensive, and unending warsone of which is now old enough to enlist itself. He sanctioned torture while wrapping his administration in a warm embrace of faith-based discrimination.
The best that could be saidand its not nothing, trulyis that he left quietly, and for eight years during President Barack Obamas presidency, stayed quiet. He went to a lot of baseball games. He did not publicly support Trump ahead of the 2016 presidential election. When he did show up at the inauguration, in January 2017, he reportedly turned to Hillary Clinton and said, that was some weird shit. At the funeral for Arizona Republican Sen. John McCainwhom Bush allies had once accused of having fathered an illegitimate child with a black womanBush offered Michelle Obama a piece of candy.

(115,673 posts)It's just that Trump and his cronies are so galactically awful that W is starting to look somewhat less bad in comparison. But we shouldn't forget how his administration was a breeding ground for this one.

(2,848 posts)He and his administration were a logical step in the progression toward the shitshow we have now. Every time the GOP takes a loss they get ideologically crazier and more criminal. The only saving grace we have now is that dump doesn't have the huge popular mandate that W had after 9/11. The dems are standing up this time and the media largely doesn't buy the narrative that criticizing dump is unpatriotic.
I shudder when I think about the next person the GOP manages to elect to the presidency. Hopefully they get so badly damaged by the scandals and prosecutions of the dump era that they never manage another one.
