In about 20 years, half the population will live in eight states

A handful of rural white right wing republicans will make the laws for everyone. Presidents who lose the popular vote but win the electoral vote will become the norm. And all this will happen even if trump is impeached and a Dem is elected in 2020.
How long can such a system survive?

2040 is the beginning of the end for the planet if Climate Change isn't drastically slowed by then. Maybe some of those states will have changing populations due to climate change and all the factors related to it.

(16,423 posts)The agrarian industries are sucking the US dry faster than rains can refill the aquifiers. I have read estimates that a tipping-point will come in 20-30 years, when farming will become unsustainable.

(51,582 posts)Do they think farm subsidies will continue forever? People are going to be moving to where the jobs are and the jobs will be in new industries so they'd better start changing their thinking now, since we are out of later. The global economy, wars, migration, famine, diseases, etc are on the horizon.

(51,582 posts)The GOP have maneuvered the minority to have the power of the majority for over 20 years. This country is going to be uninhabitable for the majority.

(4,006 posts)ND and SD should share only 1 Senator and should a few other combos, based on small populations, like ID and MT. It's a dream but....

(86,502 posts)study up, please. We ALL get to have two Senators representing us in the Senate, no matter what state we come from... has something to do with balance and other pesky factors regarding democratic processes.

(86,502 posts)that being sea level rise and climate change in general. The beaches are coming ashore, which is where all these people are, they'll have to go somewhere, and that's inland where all those states you folks want to disenfranchise. That's if we manage to recognize those who would divide just before a crucial election...

(10,533 posts)The majority of citizens will not continue to live under the rule of a dwindling minority that imposes the exact opposite (in terms of policy) of what the majority of people want. Meanwhile, the minority will increasingly turn to authoritarianism as the only means of maintaining their grip on power. That is what we are seeing with Trump.
Putin would love nothing more than for the U.S. to become a one-party state ruled by white male oligarchs who are under his sway. That is where we are headed now.

(10,533 posts)Which is why I dont think that the union will survive without major structural changes. Either it will break apart into multiple nations or it will devolve into a full-on authoritarian police state.

(26,276 posts)when they appointed Trump over Hillary despite her beating him by 3 million votes is to change the system so that the popular vote wins the office office of President with the VPs office being abolished as there is no need for it imo as we already have a line of succession established incase something happens to a President.
