The revolutionary strategy hidden in Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Instagram feed

The posts exude gratefulness and camaraderie; these women seem never to miss an opportunity to lift each other up or highlight each others accomplishments. I am inspired by the incredible work she has done for her community, wrote Sharice Davids (Kan.), one of the first two Native American women to join Congress, as she stood with her arm around Deb Haaland (N.M.), the other one.

But categorizing the posts as merely giggly squad goals is missing a deeper point, I think. Theres sophisticated work going into the messaging. These social media posts arent just about female friendship; theyre about the behind-the-scenes strategies women in mostly male workplaces have always employed to get stuff done.
Female White House staffers in the Obama administration, for example, popularized a meeting strategy theyd dubbed amplification. Tired of men ignoring their ideas or worse, claiming them as their own they decided to reiterate the good ideas voiced by other women in the room and made sure the female creator received proper credit.

Why do I sense that? Its happening already. You might have seen headlines about Ocasio-Cortez the midterms biggest breakout star, who ousted a 10-term incumbent in the New York primary joining activists in protest at Rep. Nancy Pelosis office. Immediately pundits, both armchair and television, portrayed this as a catfight or rebellion: Ocasio-Cortez was immature and showboating; Pelosi (D-Calif.), the presumptive speaker of the House, wasnt a strong enough leader to keep her people under control.
But what Ocasio-Cortez actually told assembled activists was far from combative: Should Leader Pelosi become the next speaker of the House, we need to tell her that weve got her back in showing and pursuing the most progressive energy agenda that this country has ever seen.
She spoke of her admiration for the veteran politician and praised Pelosis civic engagement.
The young women who have come to Congress have come to elevate, praise and admire one another. Not because theyre immature fangirls but because this coalition-building is their best hope for success in what remains, at its core, another mostly male workplace.

(13,877 posts)Damn right it's about women literally Coming Out as leaders. Naturally, the first task is to split the ranks...a war reference. To criticize it's lack of perfection and polish and political correctness. Seemed to have worked well for a time...even here.
This photo and the accompanying article ought to be required reading as it describes the beginning of the actual realization of what these women envisioned.
My reference to ... "Under the leadership of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and other women's rights pioneers, suffragists circulated petitions and lobbied Congress to pass a constitutional amendment to enfranchise women." This was 1920. (link has expired...but well known, in any case.)
A 100 year anniversary of The Great War. Another 100 year anniversary shortly. Quite a historical juxtaposition. We solemnly and appropriately celebrate the millions of war casualities. But, perhaps it's AOC and her supporters who have been tasked with hoisting the banner of the "other" milestone.

Let's keep up the momentum. For all my daughters and grand-daughters, all my wives and loves, and for all of us.

The right wing press is attempting to push some imaginary cat fight illusion. Its ugly, obvious and no one on DU should be enabling that garbage.
