There's No Boom in Youngstown, but Blue-Collar Workers Are Sticking With Trump

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio In May 2016, David Betras, a Democratic Party leader in the heart of industrial northeast Ohio, sent a memo warning Hillary Clintons campaign that it was on the verge of losing Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan because she was not connecting with blue-collar voters. These states should be easy wins for us, he wrote.
He said he got no answer. As he sees it now, Democrats are still just as out of touch.
Mr. Betras, who recently stepped down as Democratic chairman of populous Mahoning County, said that while Democrats in Washington harp on President Trumps unfitness for office, his taxes and possible impeachment, the president is solidifying blue-collar support through an aggressive trade war with China, even if his tariffs mean economic pain in the short term.
The Democratic Party has lost its voice to speak to people that shower after work and not before work, he said. All were saying is he wont turn over his tax returns. Hes saying, Im fighting China to get you better jobs.

After reading this article.....................maybe the people in Ohio and others places should re-read the quote by John Trudell----------

If they are too stupid to get out of their own way - then that's on them.
After how many years(???) Of GOP Governors - can we just call it a Red State, consider Sherrod the token, and move on?
Ditto the poster who wrote their ability to use the N-Word.
They dehumanize me because of the color of my skin? Fuck them. LOL has been dead a long time. There is a new "black" and we are capable of extreme cruelty.

(70,501 posts)However their racism does not stop them from liking their Cleveland Browns &
Ohio State Buckeyes. But they still listen to Rush, Fox, their Evangelical Pastors,
and generational stupidity has taken its toll on their brains.
BTW OH has as many or even more Ds than Rs but after years of Republican
control between gerrymandering, electronic voting machines, and voter purges
they have a stranglehold on power.

(31,982 posts)where Youngstown is, went for Hillary in 2016.
I hear a lot of "it doesn't matter which party is in power, nothing ever changes here." Although a lot of people around here liked trump's bombast, "tough talk", and empty promises.
Everything Tim Ryan says in that article is true.
Funny how people who are descendants of immigrants are often the most vocally opposed to new immigrants who they think "have it easy" over what their descendants had.

(6,797 posts)even though there are no jobs and nothing there they are not going to move somewhere else and they've always voted republican. They're not going to better themselves. It's poor me.

(6,994 posts)She gave those $200,000+ speeches to the Wall Street crowd and then turned the corner to speak to the Blue Collar Workers and pretend to claim she was one of them and understood their issues..
It didn't work.
Hillary's war chest was so full of $$$ she thought she would coast to victory. Sure she had over 3 mill. more popular votes but had her campaign followed Obama's strategy she would be in the White House now.
Her campaign staff was sub par and many of her managers and advisors were hired because of loyalty and not because of their campaign strategy expertise.
"Clinton earned as much as $225,000 for every speech she delivered to financial institutions like Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank AG, Morgan Stanley, and Bank of America in the two years that followed her tenure as Secretary of State."

(6,994 posts)I just stated that Hillary lost because of a sub par campaign staff.
Like Obama her vote totals should have been so overwhelming that Repukes and the Russians would not have had a chance to steal it.
Hillary's staff took so many things for granted.
The Midwest states she lost were assumed by her staff to b in her column.
She lost Michigan in the Primary and Hillary should have worked that state Vigorously in the General along with Wisc and PA..and that was the fault of the campaign strategists..They assumed to damn much

Obama did less well in 2012 than 2008. after 8 years of one party in the wh it's always more difficult.
even now trump gets over 40 percent .

She spent more money, and had a larger ground operation, in Wisconsin and Michigan than Obama did in 2012. And she made more appearances in Pennsylvania (in a tie with Ohio and Florida) than any other state.
The race was dominated by the bogus FBI investigation from start to finish.

(6,994 posts)Hilary's staff for the amount of money she had to spend, were totally incompetent.

If these folks still think those Steel Mills are coming back, wow,do they not realize it takes years to build these operations. Here is the real kicker,we as a Nation do not have the high Ferris Content Iron Ore to make these new mills profitable. Secondly,no State outside of Kentucky, will stand for the down stream Pollution Effects . Those days have long gone by.

(89,247 posts)why did the white farmers refuse to join the black farmers in opposing something they all agreed on ?
the white farmers would rather stick by trump even if they disagree on the issue rather than join the black farmers.

(3,818 posts)We are now at the 2nd generation assholes (along with 4th generation nazi's, ala Operation Paperclip) We are told to cater to them because...hell, I dunno.
These are the tea baggers (yes, I still use that term), "conservatives", etc. They are the ones who have sucked all the oxygen from the room and then allowed the CO2 levels rise, saying gawd told them it was alright to trash the place.
I'm tired of hearing that they aren't being catered to, when all the media does is kiss their ass day after day. Hell, they go out in search of the most ignorant of the group and use them as a sterling example of "conservative" politics.
Rural American needs to come to realizations - You are going to have to get some sort of education beyond 12th grade - doesn't mean university, there are great 2 year programs, but you are going to have to go. After you get your diploma and/or certificate, you are going to have to sit down and make some decisions - do you stay where you are with your people or migrate in order to get a good paying job?
You can eventually have both - get your certificate, work for awhile, and then come back and start your own business, whatever. But you are going to have to suck it up and leave for awhile.
Report from the other day - all the new jobs are happening in 20 cities. That's it. Just 20. Odds are great they aren't in rural America.
