Journalist Michael Scott Moore, who was held hostage by pirates for 32 months, offered a damning observation on American politics in the age of President Donald Trump.
In January of 2012, Moore was kidnapped in Galkayo, Somali and held until being liberated by Navy SEALs in September of 2014.
He published the memoir The Desert and the Sea : 977 Days Captive on the Somali Pirate Coast in 2018.
Moore posted a video of a Trump Department of Justice official attempting to justify not giving toothpaste or soap to children detained by the Department of Homeland Security under Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen.
Somali pirates gave me toothpaste and soap, Moore noted.

(22,380 posts)gave me insight into what it means to hem and haw. A despicable performance of bought and paid for servitude. She did not manage an argument, and made me sick to the core.
She has not slept a wink since this performance. I'm certain of it. I believe in women in general. She is a sickening exception, solidifying the rule.

(5,766 posts).... Lawyers have an obligation to represent their clients regardless of how despicable they may be. Just ask Hilary.
Now maybe she believes what she is saying. But I doubt it. And I feel a bit sorry for her. (Just a bit.)

(5,766 posts).... responsible for the policy. I don't think she should be vilified as if she were.
Career officials are responsible for advocating for the administration's policy choices without insinuating their own political views. This is part of the ethos of the career civil service. It is similar to the responsibility of trial lawyers to advocate for their client regardless of their personal judgement of their clients behavior or character. It is important to the integrity of the civil service.
If you want to denigrate someone for this policy, denigrate those who are responsible for it. She doesn't deserve it.

(6,916 posts)But there is a time when all people should stand up against atrocity.
She didnt design the policy. But she had a chance to make a stand. And she failed to do so.
Personal accountability is powerful and its worth using her name.

(8,709 posts)We will do whatever. We will stay the weekend, said the lawyer representing the ACLU, which successfully sued the Trump administration over its family-shattering practice last month.
Fabian said she had other obligations.
I have dog-sitting responsibilities that require me to go back to Colorado but I will be back Monday, she said, according to a transcript published by NBC News.
