After Trump, will GOP search soul or stay course?
By the end of this week it will be a hundred days until the 2020 election, and it sure seems like President Trump is in big trouble.
FiveThirtyEight has Joe Biden with a pretty large lead; and the Post-ABC poll has him with an even larger lead. The Upshots Nate Cohn notes that Bidens lead is larger than any presidential race has seen in the last quarter-century. The Economist projects a 93 percent chance Trump loses the electoral college and a 99 percent chance he loses the popular vote. Even GOP donors are beginning to pivot away from Trump and toward protecting the GOP majority in the Senate.
Can Trump be reelected in November? Sure, its possible! But with each day the coronavirus pandemic persists and Trump flails, the probability of a turnaround seems less likely. The likelihood that Trump will bring down other Republicans running for office must also be considered.
Lets assume this outcome for a second: What does it mean for the GOP? Politics is a coldblooded game, and even before Trump has been declared a political dead-man-walking, speculation is beginning about what comes after. Commentarys Noah Rothman recently observed, The post-Trump era could begin sooner than many expect, and it would serve Republicans to prepare accordingly.

(15,082 posts)Thanks for sharing, YMBL. The GOP as it stands now, is truly toxic and now that they have let those cats out of the bag, they can't be put back in. The racist lunatics are here for a while. I'm guessing that the Lincoln Project folks along with the other Never Trumpers might consider starting a third party.

When he's finally out of office, there's one final norm that Donald Trump is going to violate, and that's the one which says that ex-Presidents go away and shut up.
Trump is NEVER GOING AWAY! Even if he loses, he knows he has millions of willing rubes out there that he can target for years to come. The "election will be fixed" narrative he's trying to build is as much about keeping the rubes close as it is about staying in power -- if they all believe that their cult leader was cheated out of office, so much the better for his hold over them going forward.
The idea that Trump will simply disappear and the Republican party will re-emerge phoenix-like with a brand new outlook is just hilarious. Trump is going to be out there EVERY SINGLE DAY (until he either dies or is locked up) flooding the zone with Twitter bullshit, interfering in GOP primaries, and basically doing everything he can to keep his cult members riled up (and, of course, donating to the cause).
The last thing he's going to do is willingly hand the Republican party back to its "rightful owners." He owns it now, and he won't give it up easily, even (and maybe especially) after he leaves office.
