GOP Covid Relief Pkg. To Incl. Romney Bill That Would Fast Track Social Security & Medicare Cuts

Last edited Sat Jul 25, 2020, 06:53 PM - Edit history (2)

'GOP Coronavirus Relief Package to Include Romney Bill That Would 'Fast-Track Social Security and Medicare Cuts.' "They will use every opportunity and every crisis—including the mass death and economic carnage from Covid—as cover for their sick desire to destroy our Social Security system." By Jake Johnson, staff writer Common Dreams, July 24, 2020.

Shortly after publicly ditching one attack on Social Security—the payroll tax cut—Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell confirmed Thursday that the Republican coronavirus relief package will include legislation sponsored by Sen. Mitt Romney that one advocacy group described as an "equally menacing" threat to the New Deal program.

In a speech on the Senate floor, McConnell touted Romney's TRUST ACT as "a bipartisan bill, co-sponsored by Senate Democrats, to help a future Congress evaluate bipartisan proposals for protecting and strengthening the programs that Americans count on."

~ "In the midst of a catastrophic pandemic, they should be focused on protecting seniors, essential workers, and the unemployed. Instead, they are plotting to use the cover of the pandemic to slash Social Security." —Nancy Altman, Social Security Works ~

11. Those 30 Democrats are in the House on the "Trust Bill", which I don't think is the same as what

Romney is doing. The "trust bill", does not have the majority of Democrats in House on that, and I don't see Pelosi allowing Romney's "bill" to stand

As for the Senate, I think there are at least 3 Democrats for Romney's bill, maybe at most 5. Majority of Democrats in the Senate or House are not going to go for cuts in Social Security and Medicare, and I don't believe the House will accept that

7. Krysten Sinema, Doug Jones, Joe Manchin are the Dem Sponsors

Sinema, Doug Jones and Manchin are the Democratic senators giving Romney and McConnell cover for social security theft.

The question is why and second question is how to get them to not participate in the Big Lie propaganda on social security.

The Romney-McConnell plot is to present their social security destruction plan as a bipartisan endeavor. Giving cover to this has to become unthinkable for every Democrat.

10. That's what

I was thinking. Won’t Democrats have to vote on this in the House too?

13. Yes. Pelosi was asking for 3 trillion, while McConnel wanted 1 trillion, without extension to

unemployment benefits.

Pelosi no deal, and now Romney is pushing this garbage. I don't think so. At least I hope it doesn't go anywhere

14. Best thing: CALL YOUR REPS' OFFICES and urge them to vote AGAINST any FICA

tax cuts, suspensions or 'holidays'.

I didn't like this kind of scheme when Obama did it. I like it even LESS when Repukes and their Kochtopus are pushing it.

15. Just another religious hypocrite! Romney's net worth-- up to 250M.

Romney primarily made his fortune at Bain Capital from 1984 to 1999, a fortune estimated to be worth between $190 million to $250 million.
