'Dr. Fauci Takes Vitamin D and C Supplements, They Can Lessen 'Your Susceptibility To Infection'

- 'Dr. Fauci says he takes vitamin D and C supplements, and that they can lessen 'your susceptibility to infection.'- By Gabby Landsverk, 1 hr ago, Insider.

Leading infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci recommends taking your vitamins now that school has started and flu season is nearing. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, specifically suggested supplementing vitamin D and vitamin C, and said he takes them himself, in an Instagram Live interview with actress Jennifer Garner on September 10.

- "If you're deficient in vitamin D, that does have an impact on your susceptibility to infection. I would not mind recommending, and I do it myself, taking vitamin D supplements," he said. "The other vitamin that people take is vitamin C because it's a good antioxidant, so if people want to take a gram or so of vitamin C, that would be fine." -

There's a large body of research supporting Fauci's recommendations. Studies suggest vitamin D and C are your best bet for supplementing immune health. However, many of the other products sold for this purpose are useless or worse. There's evidence to support supplementing vitamin D and C for immune health.

Extensive evidence has linked vitamin D deficiency to greater risk of infection, particularly from respiratory diseases like COVID-19. That's led many researchers to investigate the use of vitamin D supplements to help prevent or lessen the impact of the coronavirus. While the findings are somewhat contentious, since researchers don't fully understand if vitamin D supplements can cause better health outcomes, studies have consistently linked vitamin D deficiency to greater risk of severe infection.

And many people are deficient in vitamin D, especially while sheltering indoors during the pandemic or in darker winter months, since our bodies naturally produce the nutrient in response to sunlight.

People with darker skin may be particularly susceptible, since melanin can slow the process of producing vitamin D. As a result, there's evidence certain people could benefit from supplementing it. Similarly, vitamin C is well-documented as an antioxidant, and getting enough of it is crucial for a healthy immune system. It hasn't been shown to prevent disease, but there's some evidence it may make it easier for people to recover from illnesses such as the common cold. However, neither of these supplements is a cure-all, and too much of either can have serious side effects.

Fauci still recommends wearing a mask, social distancing, and hand hygiene as the best practices for keeping yourself and others safe. - Please Read More...

2. Most of us northerners are vitamin D deficient.

Mine was very low when I first had it tested. I take 6000 IU per day and my levels are just barely normal. Better vitamin D levels do make for a bit sunnier disposition during our long dark winters here in MT.

4. Mine has never been flagged but I'll ask next time.

I slacked off for a while but have re-started taking Calcium soft tablets with 1,000 IU Vitamin D3, twice a day.

The sun factor has to be balanced, the lack of it up north, lots in southern climates and more needed for for seniors and others who don't get outside as much as they should.

People who are susceptible to skin cancer which is on the rise worldwide, have to watch the rays, even darker skinned folks. But I think the guidelines are about 20 mins. or more of sun a day, not lethal by any means.

In all, we have to get enough Vit D, especially now. Fauci's recommendation and the promising small study in Spain are welcome.

5. I restarted calcium with Vit D3, also a multivitamin AND

a separate vitamin C tab. When I get another physical I'll check if that's too much, but for now it's the plan.

7. Calcium and K2

Be sure to take K2 when taking calcium. If not it may deposit in tissue, instead of the bones.
