A Joliet Police Officer was arrested on Wednesday afternoon in Kendall County on charges of official misconduct for the alleged releasing of video footage reportedly showing police abuse of Eric Lurry, a black man, who later died while in custody in January.
51-year-old Javier "Butch" Esqueda, of Plainfield, posted bond and was released a few hours later. The video reportedly shows Joliet officers holding Lurry's nose and searching his mouth with a baton in the back of a squad car during a drug investigation. Lurry died minutes later.
Esqueda's lawyer Jeff Tomczak, says his client did the right thing by releasing the video months after Lurry's death.
Tomczak says Joliet Police Chief Alan Roechner had already showed video of the Eric Lurry incident to members of the media and the public before Esqueda did. WSPY news has reached out to the Joliet Police Department for comment.
Tomczak thinks the misconduct charges against Esqueda are without merit.
