Jerry Brown's advice to Joe Biden: Follow FDR. And progressives should 'chill'

Joe Garofoli, San Francisco Chronicle (via msn.com) / Dec 3, 2020

Jerry Brown has lasted five decades in public life by following his “canoe theory” of politics: Paddle a little left, then paddle a little right to maintain a mostly centrist course — or in his case, center-left.

SNIP

Brown is offering the same advice to President-elect Joe Biden, who is hearing the first complaints from progressives that he isn’t paddling left as hard as he should.

Brown’s advice to Biden is to embrace his “inner Roosevelt” and use his limited political capital to create jobs, just like FDR did when he came into office during the Depression.

For progressives, Brown’s message is: “Maybe they should, in the states where it’s now legal, get a good joint and just chill. Just chill.”

I agree, but not because I want to see centrist course. What I do want is for Democrats to hold the White House for as long as possible. It's an ugly compromise, but another George W. Bush or Donald Trump is even uglier.

with Covid 19, and for sure there is no compromising with Climate Change. With what appears to be vaccines on the near horizon, the Covid 19 problem should take care of itself. Trump was the one that should have compromised on that and issued nation wide mask wearing and social distancing. All Republicans should hang their head in shame for the mishandling of this crisis, from the top down to local mayors. All of them.

As for Climate Change, compromise left the building thirty years ago. We need drastic actions now, not twenty or even ten years from now. That crisis is going to be way worse than the pandemic, and we are already suffering the consequences in multiple ways with with catastrophic weather damage.

Another area is combating states over voter suppression, gerrymandering and purging eligible voters for no reason. Democrats may never have a fair chance in some states regardless of our numbers. It has been shown in the last ten years at local and state elections where Democrats receive far more votes but lose seats. I live in PA and we elected a Democrat Governor, but the State Legislature is run by Trump wannabe Republicans, it is almost embarrassing to see and hear some of the items they propose to run this state.

And maintaining a center or center-left position just allows the right to push us further right every time they get in power. What AOC and other progressives are pushing for is not much different than the Democratic platform for the last 50 years. The GOP though has gone so far right, even centrists policies look too progressive. Republicans from the 60s would have no chance in their party now, heck, they would even be left of some of the Democrats these days. This has to stop or we will get another Trump, and there will be no more elections after that. Trump came close to pulling off a dictatorship type coup. Imagine the damage the GOP could have done if we had not won the house back in 2018, and even that margin seems to be slipping away.

The time to act is now, and full force.
