Opinion: Trump is destroying his own party on the way out the door

This holiday season, President Donald Trump has wreaked havoc on Congress, our democracy and our judicial system by pardoning political associates and convicted murderers. But Trump has saved a special kind of Grinch-like behavior for the two Republican Senate candidates in Georgia who are headed for runoff elections in January and for Senator Mitch McConnell, whose fate as majority leader depends on the GOP winning at least one of those races.

These three are only the latest to realize that the return on investment for loyalty to Donald Trump is exactly zero. McConnell, David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler all stood on the Senate floor in February and acquitted Trump on charges he abused his power in office and obstructed Congress. But now that it's time for Trump to return the favor, our self-absorbed President seems to be doing everything he can to make it harder for all three -- and perhaps giving the Democrats the gift of control of the Senate as he leaves office.

Trump's political messages started hurting the Republican senators in Georgia long before this Christmas season. Trump railed against early voting throughout the campaign to sow doubt about the election results and set the predicate for the outrageous claims of voter fraud and attempts to nullify the November election.

Early voting, traditionally a strong suit for Republicans, provided Biden with the margins he needed around the country. In Georgia, Perdue fell just short of the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff in his re-election bid. In the other Georgia Senate contest, Loeffler came in second to Democrat Raphael Warnock in a race where no candidate hit the threshold. The combination of massive early voting by Democrats and lower numbers on the GOP side made the January 5 runoffs possible.

Trump is like the tenent from hell who trashes the house/apartment he's renting from you before he leaves.

1. True. But was it really his party? Just a matter of who was most crooked party to have him.

He doesn’t care about anyone or any party

3. This would be fine if he wasn't also holding up Covid aid.

The repugs richly deserve whatever harm trump may do to them - but the populace does not.

4. I thought he destroyed his own party on his way in the door ..

along with the dignity of the presidency. He made a mockery of it and only accomplished lowering the taxes of the wealthy.

7. C'mon, Donny, President Obama wouldn't want you to do that

I genuinely believe that President Obama would not want Donny to trash it, because Barack is an honorable man.

Which is why tRump will.

Obama/Democrats win...

9. Democrats didn't sit on their hands either

They realized how big this opportunity was with an incredible Presidential win in Georgia and Stacie Abrams and her organization got out an got another 70,000 voters on the rolls. Their goal is to get every Democrat who voted in November plus their new registrations to the polls and the early voting in precincts Biden carried in November is hitting records. On top of that, Loeffler has been swallowing her foot whole with gaffes, repeated slogans instead of intelligent conversation and at a rally supposed to be for her, got shouted down by Trumpies. Warnock runs over her in debates like she's not even there.

This is fun to watch. Here's a state full of hard core white supremacists and old-line Dixie tradition that, because of the industrial and job growth around its capital city, has been attracting thousands of liberal yankees to north central Georgia for decades. Finally, the number of those liberal yankees combined with the largest African American vote in the South to flip the state blue. BTW, North Carolina is next to flip with all those liberal yankees in the research triangle and the third largest African American voting block in the South.
