Mass confusion over Trump’s endgame as Washington barrels toward shutdown, economic crisis

White House officials have been mum on Trump’s demands, leaving Democrats and Republicans to try and parse his tweets as Monday deadline looms

As President Trump rapidly approached a Monday deadline to avert a government shutdown, aides and lawmakers appeared flummoxed about his strategy, left to interpret musings from his Twitter feed while he golfed and otherwise remained out of public view.

A large spending bill that Congress passed last week must be signed into law by midnight on Monday in order to prevent many federal agencies from dramatically scaling back their operations. After Congress passed the bill, Trump posted a video on Twitter announcing his objections to it, claiming stimulus benefits were too small and that foreign aid was too excessive.

Since he posted the video on Dec. 22, White House aides have not offered any public briefings on Trump’s strategy or plans. Instead, Trump has issued a series of tweets reiterating his demand for changes but not saying much more. Vice president Mike Pence is in Vail, Colo. and has also been out of sight in recent days.

The consequences of inaction are immense.

Starting Tuesday, hundreds of thousands of federal employees would be sent home without pay. And even the many federal employees who continue to work because they are deemed “essential,” such as members of the military, will not be paid until a new funding bill is authorized.

rather than “adjourned” that the pocket veto rule does not apply and the bill would become law if he didn’t sign.

Corrections are welcomed, not stating facts, just wondering if I am wrong.

Congress adjourns January 3rd, and multiple news outlets say a rare pocket veto situation is in play.

In the mean time:

Government spending authority expires on midnight December 28th (end of Monday), and the government shuts down.

Eviction protections lapse or are frozen starting January 1st.

I've been dreading his "lame duck" period since the day he was elected.

Honestly, it is not as bad as I expected.

Not yet, anyway.

And none of this “essential services” shit, either. Nothing for air traffic control, TSA, Customs, ports of entry, vaccine deliveries, etc. These are the “small government” fanatics so let them eat the shit pie they made. You want to know what “small government” really means? Well, here it is!

This is ALL on Trump - and the spineless GOP hypocrites who enable him - so let them eat their fill and have EVERY Democrat point to them and say, “YOU did this!”.

These are real people we're talking about, people with families. They are not all Trumpers or even conservatives. And you're advocating no vaccine delivery, no customs, etc., - this will leave many people outside the government fucked more than 45/2020 has already fucked us all. This kind of vindictiveness doesn't suit Democrats; we try to leave the petty bullshit to the Repigs.

Either that or legislation absolving him of any and all past, present, and future federal crimes.

He's just that fuckin' nuts.

He's taking the whole country hostage.
