A Black Police Officer Saved America On Wednesday. Say His Name.

- Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman.

'A Black Police Officer saved America on Wednesday. Say His Name.' Daily Kos, Jan. 10, 2021.

I’ve mentioned from time to time that my brother is in law enforcement. He’s a cop. Sometimes he’s even a bastard. And he saves lives. He was there when the towers fell. Yes, Ground Zero. Evacuating people from the area before it all came tumbling down. He fishes bodies from rivers. From time to time he even manages to stop the suicides before they happen such as when Primetime news caught him saving some white executive bro from stepping off the ledge. He’s even provided security for — wait for it — … Susan Sarandon.

So you’ll have to forgive the tears in my eyes when I saw Officer EUGENE GOODMAN make himself bait as white domestic terrorists chased him up several flights of stairs in the Capitol on Wednesday. I watched the footage and wondered why did he repeatedly stop to goad them, then lead them on, stop to goad again, then lead them on. Well, now we know.

(Tweet). This moment in @igorbobic stunning footage. In front of the officer, coming up the stairs, is a mass of rioters. The USCP officer glances to his left. Between those two chairs is the entrance to the senate floor. He lured them to his right, away from their targets.

This man risked his life to give the members of the Senate enough time to clear the area.

HIS LIFE for a country that pays him less and probably told him he couldn’t get the day off like so many other Capitol Police who were not onsite that fateful day.

HIS LIFE for a country that asks him to defend it while he works alongside other officers who would rather this country be a white ethnostate.

HIS LIFE for a country that also calls him a bastard for wearing the uniform and doing his duty to serve and protect...

______________

> ('It Could Have Been MUCH Worse') ..rioters had crashed through windows and climbed into the Capitol and clashed with police, including a lone Black Capitol police officer who tried to prevent them from ascending toward the Senate chamber.

A video captured by Igor Bobic, a congressional reporter for HuffPost on the scene, shows the officer trying to hold back a few dozen rioters who push him back and up the steps leading almost directly to the chamber. For almost a minute, the officer held them back — at the exact moment that, inside the Senate, police were frantically racing around the chamber trying to lock down more than a dozen doors leading to the chamber floor and the galleries above.

“Second floor!” the officer yelled into his radio, alerting other officers and command that the mob had reached the precipice of the Senate..

Similarly, the three officers who stood in front of the door to the Speaker’s Lobby were able to delay it being broken into long enough until additional officers with semi-automatic or automatic long guns arrived. Yes, one person was shot and killed trying to crawl through a broken window, but a mass rush in - where there anough officers to stop them? We know that had that entrance been breached the Congressmen who were still within the chamber would have been trapped...

I wondered what he was doing . This is stunning.

Man, that was really brave and smart too! He deserves a medal or some sort of high commendation.

Not from trump tho.

7. Enduring gratitude for this man. But did the backup cops arrest those who were obviously going to

hurt him if they could?

12. If Biden wants to "rehabilitate" the Presidential Medal of Freedom...

...he should make Officer Goodman his first recipient – at the SOTU next month.

16. I can't even imagine the courage it took.

These people probably wanted to lynch him like the KKK did yet he overcame that and kept going.

20. A man of extraordinary bravery who when faced with lethal horror exhibited stellar composure

He quite literally in a split second thought of the single best way to avoid a massacre and at great risk to himself acted on it. Not sure I nor many people would have been able to think so rationally under those circumstances. I would like to think that we would, but the point is he DID. His courage and professionalism under the worst of circumstances serves as a reminder of the great things human beings are capable of, and it stands as a stark counterpoint to the gutter barbarism that threatened his life, the lives of those in his charge, and our democracy itself. He is the very definition of a hero and someone who should be held up as a model for what it means to be a true patriot and a caring human being as we all can learn from his example.

23. Very well said, a true hero and patriot lucky for us. Goodman

also understands human psychology well, esp. in how he held the rioters interest and lured them to follow him and it worked out. Backup was there on the 2nd floor because of his cool courage, brains and radio call. What a great American.
