The First Step to Unity Is Holding the MAGA Mob to Account

But the Democrats can’t stop there. Real reforms then have to follow.

President Joe Biden’s inaugural address clearly came from his heart. Watching the speech, you could see and hear the degree to which the abuses and divisions of the Trump years offended and concerned him. His call for unity—the central theme of his remarks—was not mere words. He dedicated his “whole soul” to the mission of “uniting our people, uniting our country.”

But he also noted that achieving unity was “the most elusive of all things in a democracy.” He squarely acknowledged our history of divisions both in the past and during our recent history.

He referred to our current politics as being torn apart by “an uncivil war that pits red vs. blue, rural vs. urban.”

Against the backdrop of not just the Capitol but of the violent attack on that building just two weeks earlier, his words gained both context and a sense of urgency. The new president clearly understands that we are living at an extraordinarily dangerous moment in our history. Decisions we make in the weeks and months ahead will have profound consequences about whether our democracy will survive.

2. Problem is, you cannot crush an idea.

As long as there are people that think they are superior to others, in this case skin color, they will continue to cause trouble. It may be minor skirmishes, but it will always be there. Racism has been part and parcel of our country from before it was a country. It will not go away easily. The best we can hope to do is obliterate the large groups through investigations and arrests. And then just keep chipping at all the smaller groups. They are not the brightest bunch of people so our investigative branches should be able to keep tabs on them and then pounce when they do something illegal, so they can be apprehended and jailed.

Their outlook on life is ingrained, usually through generations of such ideals. I do not think re-education is possible, or assimilation into a greater understanding that everyone is equal. We have to keep constant pressure on them and show them there racism will not be tolerated in a civil society.

We, the vast majority have to be vigilant and do our part to ease racial tensions where and when we can. It is going to be a long battle.
