The Global Radical Rt Celebrated When Extremists Breached The U.S. Capitol, Drew Lessons From It

- Berlin, Aug. 29, 2019: German white nationalists organized under the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party attempted to storm the Reichstag (parliament) building, but failed. Far right and Covid deniers protested against restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic. A demonstrator wrapped in the German Empire flag faces off with riot policemen. The AfD organizers drew inspiration from the Jan. 6 siege of the U.S. Capitol.

Most of the world—particularly leaders around the globe—was shocked and horrified Jan. 6 when a mob of far-right insurrectionists attempted to prevent Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory, recognizing it as a “direct attack on democracy.” But at the same time, leaders of the global radical right from Europe and elsewhere were watching those events unfold with undisguised glee—for largely the same reasons.

“We were following it like a soccer match,” a German far-right publisher told The New York Times. European white nationalists were especially excited because they had attempted the same thing at the Parliament building in Berlin in August and had failed. The successful breach by the American mob gave them hope, as well as ideas for the future. German authorities responded to the U.S. insurrection by tightening security around Parliament. Elsewhere in Europe, officials voiced concern about the attack’s energizing effect on neo-Nazis and other far-right authoritarians.

Miro Dittrich, an expert on far-right extremist networks, told the Times that the connections are more ideological than organizational: “It’s not so much forging a concrete plan as creating a violent potential,” he said.

“Far-right extremists, corona skeptics and neo-Nazis are feeling restless,” Stephan Kramer, the domestic intelligence chief for Thuringia, an eastern German state, told the Times. While many are elated that the insurrectionists successfully breached the Capitol, others were frustrated that it didn’t actually lead to a successful Donald Trump coup, or spark a civil war. The reaction abroad underscores that what has happened to the United States is part of a larger picture involving a global far-right movement working in concert to install anti-democratic, right-wing authoritarian states in governments around the world.

While Americans struggle to cope with the reality of a right-wing insurrection inspired by Trump and the shadow of a looming far-right insurgency, coming on the heels of a seemingly endless stream of domestic terrorists either enacting or attempting mass murder in public spaces—all of them fitting the profile of the “red-pilled” conspiracy theorist radicalized online, many of them killing sequentially, inspired by each previous likeminded terrorist—they may take some small consolation in the realization that they are not alone.

..The sober realization that the rising tide of white-nationalist terrorism is not just an American problem, but a global one that reaches every corner of an internet-connected world, makes clear the massive breadth and scope of the problem...

- The Identitarian movement or Identitarianism is a post-World War II European far-right political ideology asserting the right of Europeans and peoples of European descent to culture and territories claimed to belong exclusively to them. Originating in France and building on ontological ideas of modern German philosophy, its ideology was formulated from the 1960s onward by essayists such as Alain de Benoist, Dominique Venner, Guillaume Faye and Renaud Camus, considered the movement's intellectual leaders... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identitarian_movement
