Eric Cantor: Republicans refusing to tell truth led to Capitol siege
Carly Roman 13 hrs ago
Former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said a failure by elected Republicans to tell the truth led to the deadly Capitol riot on Jan. 6.
In an op-ed published in the Washington Post on Friday, Cantor focused on the challenges to the 2020 election results but argued that the trouble began when conservative groups such as Heritage Action and Tea Party Express "purposely ramped up expectations" for Republican voters who wanted to repeal Obamacare in the GOP-controlled House in 2013.
"At first, this was a political headache for me and my colleagues ... but then a small group of lawmakers in the House and the Senate, led by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), started telling the base what they longed to hear: that Republicans could indeed defund Obamacare," he wrote. "These members, and indeed every other elected Republican, knew better, but very few were willing to say so."
Cantor argued that the same tactic of intentionally feeding voters misinformation to gin up the base pervaded in 2020, when claims of widespread voter fraud cast a shadow over President Biden's electoral victory in the minds of many Republican voters, even as the courts and election officials rejected the allegations.

(47,397 posts)but he was part of the dishonesty as well. Funny how republicans who are no longer in office, tend to sound so reasonable, but if they were still in congress, they probably wouldn't be much different than the people they are criticizing. I'm glad Cantor is reasonable now, but I remember him as being a real snake when he was in the House.

(182,763 posts)The national GOP (DC mentality really) figured he was super safe so the state GOP redistricted the 7th to swallow up some RED RED areas in the middle of the state. They used Cantor to give cover to other Repub districts. They underestimated the RED turnout.
At the same time we have open primaries here. There was no Dem primary because (DC) why? Cantor and Bliley before him won with at least 60%. BUT that means Dems like me can vote in the Repub primary...and we did. Bratt beat Cantor by about 7,000 votes. That equals 5% of Obamas vote total in the 7th. Im like many many Dems here who would never miss a chance to vote against Cantor.

(182,763 posts)The 7th has been changing fast since 2014. Abigail is from the heart of the district and has an incredible resume. She also developed an incredible ground game and worked her ass off. Freitas was a good candidate but she made it through against him this time. The 7th went from a 60% vote LOCK to a toss up real quick like. It was restricted too - vastly different from what Bailey and Cantor used to have.

(988 posts)Cantor was Majority Leader while the Republican Congress voted 49 times to repeal the ACA (Obamacare).
Cantor was Majority Leader while the Republican Congress shut down the Government in 2013 in a play to repeal the ACA.
Cantor and Paul Ryan could not control their caucus. They knew that every bill they passed had no chance in the Senate. They knew that if their efforts succeeded in the Senate that President Obama would veto the bill. The Republicans wasted time and money for 9 years trying to repeal the ACA.
Republicans didn't spend one minute in the past 9 years trying to come up with a replacement health care bill.
"Moderate" Republicans didn't spend one minute since 2009 telling their base the truth.

(3,011 posts)He knowingly lied. He admits to participating in the lying of others. Republicans participated in this because they benefited from it. He needs to join with Lincoln Project or Republicans against Trump and fight for our democracy. It's still all hands on deck.

(17,911 posts)Demonizing ACA. Death panels, guvamunt take over of healthcare, loose your regular MD for some faux liberal MD assigned by the commie state.....and on and on. Those sets of lies that Cantor was directly involved in set the stage for the lies he's yelping about now. Fuck you, Eric. You're as guilty as Ted the Creepy ever was. You helped create the monster and Jan 6 was the logical endgame of your fucked up politics. Fuck you, Eric. Fuck you.

Cowardice is still the most common trait with Republicans.
