Ron DeSantis's repulsive war on Disney will soon face a reckoning

The stench of presidential ambition around Ron DeSantis has grown so thick that it resembles Charlie Brown pal Pigpen’s visible cloud of filth, and key to the Florida governor’s hopes is finding a way to capture the political energies unleashed by Donald Trump.

DeSantis must accomplish this while carving out a distinct path from that of the former president, who might run again himself. DeSantis’s new war with Disney appears to fit the bill perfectly.

As a good report from NBC News chronicles, DeSantis’s fellow Republicans see this battle as key to burnishing his national anti-“woke” brand. DeSantis escalated his attacks on Disney amid its criticism of the law he signed limiting classroom discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity.

But DeSantis’s war on Disney will soon face a reckoning. A big question is whether DeSantis will seek to revoke Disney’s state tax incentives as a weapon in the war over that measure, which opponents call the “Don’t Say Gay” law.

If so, that could alienate Republicans who are fine with a bit of performative culture-warring but want to keep corporations happy where it really counts, i.e., on their bottom line. If not, that could disappoint right-wingers who actively want Republicans to wield state power wherever possible to bring “woke” corporations to their knees.

He wants to remove their ability to police themselves, something that they have done very well for 50 years...
Then he can insist that they get the kind of policing that will insure that the place will become a hell-hole. DeSantis wants to kill the goose that laid the golden egg because the corporation did not bow at his feet. Personally, I am not usually a defender of mega-corporations, but Disney, for what ever reason, has taken the high ground in this fight, and I have their back.

Us old timer Floridians remember when Disney World was swamp and cow pastures and Orlando was a small hick town in the middle of nowhere, but DeSantis, the good Republican that he is, only knows how to destroy, not build. I hope that the man chokes on his self-righteousness, but, if Trump is not available, DeSantis will probably be the next Republican nominee for the office of President. If nominated he would stand at least a 50/50 chance of being elected. If that happens it would accelerate our national slide to Fascism. Goddamn DeSantis and the criminal gang of cutthroats that we have sent to Tallahassee.

When the "new" Florida capitol building, a 22 story structure, was built, the rumor was that it was built, unwittingly, over a sinkhole that was only discovered after the construction had proceeded too far to turn back. Where is God when you need him?

because it gave its gay and lesbian employees insurance benefits, and because it had in-park holidays for them. The following year, Disney's profits went up. In 2000, the Southern Baptist Convention held its annual meeting in Orlando. I think that was a hint that the boycott wasn't ever going to be taken seriously. They've met there once again since, and were scheduled to meet there year before last but were cancelled by COVID. And yes, the messengers to the convention, mostly pastors and their families, poured through the gates at all the Disney parks. So much for the boycott.

Desantis isn't big enough. Disney will take him down.

Disney could easily crater a huge chunk of the economy of the state in short order if he pisses them off enough.

They're not going anywhere, and DeSantis knows it. Disney will just keep doing what it's been doing, and live with Republican threats and attacks.

Advertising within the state to take him down. Desatan thinks he’s invisible and he’s not.

I hope Disney smacks him back big time!
