Opinion: Why Republicans love desperate refugees

Leonard Pitts Jr.
9.25.2022

If conservatives really wanted to fix immigration, they could have done so years ago. Certainly, the broad outlines of a workable overhaul have long been obvious: a combination of hardened border security, a guest-worker program, streamlining the process for immigration and creating a pathway to citizenship for immigrants here illegally.

And mind you, Florida has no international land border. But apparently, this stunt was too tempting for DeSantis to allow a little geography to get in his way. He reached halfway across the country to, in effect, kidnap dozens of people in what his office calls a "relocation program to transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities." In GOP circles, this is apparently what passes for wit.

Never mind that DeSantis victimized vulnerable people. Or that immigration lawyers say his stunt could complicate their asylum claims. Again, this is not about immigration. It's about cruelty as political stratagem. After all, if you solve a problem, you can no longer exploit it. But leave it unsolved and you can use it to rub raw the emotions of your target audience -- e.g., white people terrified at the browning of America -- and stampede them to the polls.

Few things could be of greater interest to DeSantis, whose presidential lust is an open secret. Sure enough, he received a standing ovation from the party faithful in Kansas a few days later. It was a vivid snapshot of the moral imbecility and rottenness of character that now define the Republican Party. They should be ashamed of themselves, but they won't be.

Russian Organized Crime: The Foundation for Trafficking

$6 Billion a Year Industry

Why are Russian Organized Crime (ROC) syndicates involved in the trafficking of women and children? Because prostitution and the trafficking in human beings has become a $6-billion-dollar-a-year business of choice for Russian organized crime. Why that business flourishes in the United States deserves closer scrutiny.

The tri-state region of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania has long been one of the top areas in the United States for the relocation of Russian émigrés.

Along with bringing hard working and upright émigrés, this relocation brought the ROC syndicate and other small time criminals to the area as well. In the former Soviet Union, personal wealth, privilege, dachas, and diamonds rested on control of goods and services illegally diverted from the State and changed for other illegally diverted goods ad services in vast and complex patterns of bribery, corruption and blackmail. The ROC came here well schooled in bureaucratic circumvention and with the ability to adapt governmental services for private gain.

Common criminal activities committed by ROC include burglary, credit card forgery, theft, auto theft, insurance and medical fraud, fuel tax fraud, arson, prostitution and narcotics trafficking. The ROC syndicates conduct the most sophisticated operations ever seen in the United States, based on their access to expertise in computer technology, encryption techniques and money-laundering facilities that process hundreds of millions of dollars. It obtains money and power through criminal conduct, then infiltrates our legitimate society.

“Shame” is what a person who possesses a conscience feels upon making a serious mistake.

Most republicans, and especially those who cheered De Santis after his sickening stunt with vulnerable human beings used for a political punchline, HAVE no conscience and therefore little capacity for shame.
