Coach suspended for making "master-slave" remark to college basketball player; says it was a
"Bible quote."

Former Texas Tech men's basketball coach Mark Adams, who is white, told one of his players, who is black, that there is "always a master and a servant." Adams claimed he was quoting the Bible, no reference included, about "coaching and when you have a job and being coach able." Apparently, the word "slave" was used in the original conversation he had with the player.
"I said that in the Bible, Jesus talks about how we all have bosses and we all are servants," Adams said, in defense of his remark, for which he did not apologize. "I was quoting the Bible about that."
I can see where those who jumped up to defend him, mostly white, Southern Baptist complementarians, as Mark Wingfield, the author of the article in Baptist News Global called them, doing so because they have so sharply divided the world into their definition of "woke" when it comes to their culture war issues that they are blinded to any kind of sensitivity. Frankly, I don't see where the master-slave analogy really fits in a coaching situation, that's not how athletic coaching works. It's not a "master-servant" relationship, the players are not "servants" of a coach who acts as a master. But that's really beside the point. The use of the term, by a white man to a black man, was insensitive and inappropriate and the defense of it was insensitive and wrong.
Racism is still alive in this country, and it can still be found in places where it isn't expected.

He did not "quote the Bible." He cited a few phrases using the words "master" and "slave" to an African American player on the team. As an employee of a University, even one in Texas, he should know better than to be so insensitive.
The religious conservatives who pretended holy horror and declared that he got fired for "quoting the Bible" weren't paying attention. He misquoted the Bible out of its context and in a way that had nothing to do with the meaning of what he claimed to have cited. Normally, they are ripping the shreds out of people who misuse and misquote but this guy fits their culture war narrative, so it is OK in that context to misquote and take the Bible out of its context.
Hypocrites.

(5,088 posts)Racism is so ingrained in this society that we need to rethink the entire concept of 'society' as it currently stands. But, that would not be profitable, even if it would save lives. And, racism is very profitable. Any divisiveness is profitable when you have whole industries that profit from the division. And, there are plenty of people profiting off of this despicable practice. You remove the profit, watch how fast this stupid crap disappears. (Which is what would happen with many of the stupid things in our society. But since profit is more important than people...)

(29,034 posts)it's all about "this country" and the profit motive?.
Racism is about far more than that, and anyone who thinks racism is restricted to "this" country really needs to get out more.

(5,088 posts)But, since my poor ass does not travel outside of this country as you obviously do, I was referring to what is going on here. I apologize for not including a long paragraph that includes every single country on the planet and a detailed report on specific incidents in each location. Also, after re-reading my post a few times, I fail to see where I mentioned that profit is what it was 'all about'. Please feel free to indicate where this is said, as I may have missed it.
