Former city councilman going to prison after molesting girl for seven years

Several people in a packed courtroom stared daggers into the back of former Ammon city councilman Byron Wiscombe’s head as he was sentenced to go to prison.

Byron Wiscombe, 45, will serve a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 33 years in prison. District Judge Dane Watkins Jr. handed down the sentence Monday afternoon.

Wiscombe was charged with one count of felony lewd conduct with a child under 16, one count of felony sexual battery on a child, one count of felony video voyeurism, and one count of misdemeanor sexual battery.

He was also charged with another count of misdemeanor sexual battery in a separate case concerning a woman. He originally pleaded not guilty to all charges but a plea agreement was reached in November. Wiscombe agreed to plead guilty to felony lewd conduct with a child if all other charges, including the case concerning the woman, were dropped.

Also: I read the article and unless I missed it I didn't see any mention of his political affiliation.

Since he's a councilman in Idaho, am I wrong in assuming he's a Republican?

And maybe I'm off the mark on this as well, but somehow it seems to me whenever a Democrat is indicted or found guilty of such a crime--or any crime--his party identity is mentioned front and center. When it's a Republican--not so much.

Does anyone else share in this admittedly anecdotal observation?

Update on our January 27th post about Byron Wiscombe of Ammon, Idaho. Not only is he a former city councilman, but per an anonymous source to #ProtectEveryChild, Wiscombe is a former LDS bishopric counselor. They report that a victim in this case is non-related and was groomed by Wiscombe during LDS “worthiness” interviews.

Sounds like a great opportunity for a predator to take advantage of a minor.
