From the Archive: July 14 is a French holiday celebrating the 1789 liberation of the Bastille prison in Paris, leading to the overthrow of the monarchy. But there were less auspicious events connected to that date in 2003, during the autocratic presidency of George W. Bush, writes ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern.

For those tracking the long train of abuses and usurpations of a modern-day George who would be King and his eminence grise behind the throne, July 14 has a resonance far beyond the fireworks of Bastille Day. Four loosely related events on this day four years ago throw revealing light on key ingredients of the debacle in Iraq.

First, on July 14, 2003 the Washington Post and other papers carried a column by Robert Novak titled “Mission to Niger,” in which he set out to disparage former Ambassador Joseph Wilson and punish him by destroying the undercover life of his wife, Valerie Plame.

The White House offensive against Wilson had been in the planning stage for several months. ....................

1. This was when it started to get out that Bush-Cheney's WMD pretext for war with Iraq was a fraud.

The Administration was looking to destroy those within CIA who had been telling the truth as a warning to the others not to start talking openly.

How soon we forget. It seems that even at DU there are unwelcome truths. Much of the buildup to war with Syria and Iran are similarly based upon highly organized campaigns of deception and propaganda.

of the previous administration's false premise for attacking Iraq (and possibly even Afghanistan), a precedent was established that will free the current administration from any future investigations into their "campaigns of deception and propaganda" that result in attacking countries like Syria and Iran.

Used to be the Cold War excused all crimes of state. They have yet to come up with a new universal excuse for bad behavior.
