Juror: I'm Too Racist And Homophobic To Serve On Jury

A British man who said his "extreme homophobic and racist views" should make him ineligible for jury duty now faces prosecution over the claim.
The Daily Echo reports that the man's identity is being kept anonymous for now but that Judge Gary Burrell QC read the leader in open court. In the letter, the man writes:
"I strongly believe that it would be a serious injustice to the legal system to select me for jury service.

I knew years ago who told them during jury selection that he would love to serve and then made sure to tell the Judge how he hated cops and would do anything to make them look bad.

All I have to do is tell the truth about my family when I get there. I'm usually excused pretty early.

I've just completed jury service, at the next Crown Court to Southampton. You don't get a chance to say anything about yourself, unless you do what this man did. A list of the potential witnesses or people involved in the case is read out. If you know them, you have to say so (what happens then, I'm not certain - I was on 3 jury panels, and no-one knew anyone involved). If not, 12 are selected to stand up to take the oath/affirmation, and the defendant(s) can object to them at that time (in which case another from the panel would be used). No-one objected in those 3 trials, and I think that's typical.

Since it says he was selected for a particular case, that means he'd already turned up at the court - you're not assigned to a case until it's about to start. He must have passed the note to the judge in court; possibly when he saw the defendant, or possibly he had written it beforehand, it's hard to tell.
