Romney comes clean -- the rich are just better

Brian Dickerson: Romney comes clean -- the rich are just better
1:19 PM, September 18, 2012
By Brian Dickerson
Detroit Free Press columnist

"Sooner or later," a detective in one of John le Carre's espionage novels observes, "a man will sign his name." He's remarking on the frequency with which even the most meticulous criminals eventually give themselves away. But he might as well be talking about the way even the most carefully scripted candidates for public office invariably reveal, in the course of a long campaign, what they really think.

Mitt Romney is among the most disciplined men ever to seek the presidency, but in the past week he has repeatedly eclipsed his campaign's machine-tooled message with a series of impromptu but indelibly revealing remarks.

His latest ad lib heard-round-the-world was actually made last May at a $50,000-a-plate fund-raiser. But it became public only yesterday, when a videotape in which Romney can be heard writing off the 47% of the electorate who pay no income taxes in language that even J.P. Morgan and John D. Rockefeller would have hesitated to use in public.

-snip-

Then -- lest anyone in the room fail to understand the sort of shiftless, irredeemable parasites he was talking about -- the GOP nominee added ruefully that he despaired of ever convincing the Feckless 47% that "they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

-snip-

This is in the same vein as George W. Bush's speech to wealthy donors, which he called "the haves" and "the have mores," making no secret which he supported.

Unfortunately, it didn't cause him to be turfed out in 2004, probably because he scared the hell out of the electorate with the fiction that a John Kerry presidency would invite another 9/11.

Hell, he didn't win the first time, either. When will we have honest elections? Everyone should use a paper ballot, that is mailed to a lockbox, and counted in South Africa by Nelson Mandela, or the equivalent.

His first term was an "anointing" by a compliant SCOTUS.

But one thing that certainly helped him "win" his "second" term, besides the skullduggery in Ohio, was that he scared the shit out of people that if Kerry were elected, supposedly we'd be overrun by terrorists and only He, SuperGeorge, could protect us.
