Who wins a GOP civil war? The Democrats do
... In an op-ed back in December in the Wall Street Journal, Karl Rove in effect begged Barack Obama to save the GOP from a civil war with itself, warning the president that Republican infighting could cause significant collateral damage to his second term.
...its darkly humorous to see a take-no-prisoner political warrior such as Rove try to make the case for mercy. That is perhaps the most telling measure of the GOPs predicament.

(11,464 posts)he becomes the adult to the tea party-moderate split and easily wins the nomination in 2016
but he can't win the general, none of them can.
The tea party is already a sliver of what it was
and by 2016, the NRA will IMHO be dead.

(10,745 posts)And most likely in 2016, before the GOP's breakup really does begin in earnest. I'd be watching for Kirsten Gillibrand or Julian Castro in 2020.....because if a guy like Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, or, god forbid, Rand Paul, wins, and does something really stupid, like invades Iran or lets the bankers crash the economy all over again(likely to be the latter, TBH, because it's easier to get away with), then I'd fully expect a Democratic landslide with a really good candidate like these two.

If the GOP really does come apart at the seams, progressive Democrats could win, at least until conservative Dems assimilated the semi-sane among the ranks of former Republicans and formed a new corporate party.
