Gov. Scott Walker promised to create 250,000 new jobs in his term as governor of Wisconsin. Unfortunately, he has failed. Miserably. Two years into his first term, his policies have stalled growth in Wisconsin. Its so bad that, through much of Walkers term, Wisconsin has led the nation not in job creation but in job losses.
The numbers are a nightmare. At a point when Wisconsin should have added 125,000 new jobs, by the standard Walkers 2010 campaign set for what could reasonably be expected, the real figure is not even one-third of that.
At this rate, Walker should be preparing to admit failure and acknowledge that he lacks the skills and the credibility to carry on as governor.
But thats not what is happening. Instead, he and his aides are preparing a strategy for meeting the goal the governor set for himself.
They are lying.
As he approached the halfway point in his term, Walker said Dec. 12 at an event in Pewaukee that the state was closing in on his goal, having created just under 100,000 jobs. That was a lie. He had no job figures to back up the claim.
When pressed, Walker spokeswoman Jocelyn Webster said 86,490 private-sector jobs had been created between December 2010 and June 2012. That was a deliberate deception, using partial and skewed figures.
The accurate figure, according to the nonpartisan PolitiFact analysis, is 37,011.
