The list goes on and on…

All of the above are heinous and insidiously intertwined manifestations of a dominant culture constructed on the foundation of privilege and hierarchy… but only one of them is directly responsible for the murder of 53 billion land animals per year.

Only one of them is directly responsible for deforestation, topsoil depletion, overfishing, water pollution, corporate control of the food chain, unspeakable animal cruelty, and so much more.

Only one of them consumes and destroys one-third of the planet’s land surface.

Only one of them is the number one source of human-created greenhouse gases (translation: climate change threatening all forms of life on earth).

This most prevalent and dangerous of all privileges is, of course, speciesism.

1. Then again, my cat has gotten the last couple of years

of enjoying her life thanks to this research. She's on 2 blood pressure drugs, a histamine-1 antagonist, time release potassium and a tetracyclic antidepressant. With this combination of drugs, her kidney functions are improving, her appetite is great, her electrolytes are normal, and the combination has bought her some good cat time. She gets pills once a day, so she's miserable for maybe 5 seconds when I pop them in. The other 23:59:55, she's almost a normal puddytat.

She'd be dead without all this stuff after weeks of misery. I think we can both be very grateful to lab critters, some of whom tested the medications that are buying her good time.

Lab research on animals works both ways. Sometimes the animals derive even greater benefit from some drugs than humans do.
