'I feel like I’m in House of Cards': an exclusive interview with Abby Martin, the Russia Today presenter who spoke out about Ukraine

....

Washington DC was the last place Martin expected to end up. When RT offered her a job in June 2012 she thought, “there's no way I’m going to Washington, it's douchebag central. It sounded like the last place I’d ever want to live in my life, with bad mojo.” Moving to DC was "a tough transition". "I felt like a loner. I had no friends here. Everyone is working in government in some way. The city feels like a giant college campus. It is like House of Cards, with its insidious Machiavellian operators." She lives in "the hipster area" with her two cats who are “dolls” and art everywhere – “art is catharsis from the craziness”. She paints and has a show coming up in San Francisco so lives alone to leave more space for her works.

The daughter of property manager parents, Martin grew up in a radical area of Oakland. It was a boyfriend who politicised her. “I was in high school and 9/11 happened. My boyfriend joined the army and I was extremely disgusted with this war fervour. I wasn’t really political at the time but going to college and learning about what military aggression and imperialism do was shocking; as well as the unaccountable nature of corporations and unyielding corporate influence in politics.”

He wanted to become a soldier, “because of this fervour in the post 9/11 world. Everyone was putting American flags on cars and houses. There was that hyper-nationalistic mentality that blinded people. They joined the army to lash out at who they felt was responsible.”

Martin and her boyfriend carried on their relationship through her freshman year of college but drifted apart: “I was learning what’s going on and couldn’t disagree with him more. He was a completely different person. It’s really shocking to see what the military can do, strip you of any personality, turn you into an aggressive, sociopathic sadist before even going into a battlefield. He was my high school sweetheart. I truly loved him. It was tough but I think maybe if it wasn’t for that initial personal passion about what was going on at that moment I wouldn’t have started to dig into bigger picture.”

which more or less means anyone can get it.

I hadn't bothered looking for a week or so but did yesterday and sure enough she was on her usual feature program.
