(28,926 posts)It won't matter what word you attach to people with the medical term Mental Retardation, because over time kids will hijack it and make it derogatory. So we will just have to keep finding new words to call Mental Retardation. Why not just call it what it is and what Doctors call it. "Retardation" and shorten it to Retarded? http://www.psychologytoday.com/conditions/mental-retardation
Not to mention Retarded is technically correct: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/retarded
Just NEVER go FULL RETARD!

(2,222 posts).....serves what purpose? Maher loves to rattle the cage? So what. Poster has an agenda. WTF! Oh noes, I'm so offended! Clutching my pearls! Give me a break. Let's ban a few more words and ostracize a bit more until everything is "perfect".

(28,926 posts)Just saying I think Maher's point is "what is wrong with dogs". Humans seem to think we are better than other animals. Well, maybe we are not. Are we better just because we are "smarter". What makes us better? A lot of people (not me) like animals more than humans. Anyway, I think this was his point. But YOU NEVER compare humans to animals who are less intelligent than US! We are amazing! WE ARE HUMANS! What a bunch of BS.

(12,502 posts)as president, so the word retard was being thrown around loosely quite a bit then. Maher, version 2001, was just reflecting a common view of the disadvantaged among us using the language of the day.

I love the word retard/retrded and wish I could use it with impunity

(27,461 posts)if you use the word, you can hurt people. I'm glad there isn't impunity for that word.
