A Republican actually pointing this out... considering that the vast majority off "donor states" are blue and the vast majority of "welfare states" are red if this actually gains traction and people start realizing this it would be hilarious.

I live in Tennessee (which gets $1.27 for every dollar it pays in taxes) and to hear the backwards right-wingers here grumbling about how "the durn gummint needs to keep its hands to itself and stay out of people's wallets" is infuriating.

There needs to be a new categotry of moochers and takers who are too stupid to realize they bleed off those they despise and in their tiny minds think they are Libertarian Republicans.

... to build Noah's ark

These states that get more than they put in...especially in areas that AREN'T vast deserts or rugged mountains but rather populated (like my state of NC), if they'd use their money to set up decent public transpo and some incentives to make people want to live there, like some arts and parks and some quality of life.... then they might get enough businesses, and a standard of living, to become donor states, or at least break even. Of course, unlike NJ, agrarian states, not the size of CA, have a harder time with that.

25. Christie did as much as any Democrat to defeat Willard (Mitt) Romney . . .
Wed Jul 31, 2013, 03:50 PM
Jul 2013

With the possible exception of President Obama, Governor Christie did as much as any individual Democrat to assure the defeat of Willard (Mitt) Romney last November. He may be a Republican, and even an asshole Republican, but his show of partnership with our President after Hurricane Sandy was a huge boost to Obama's fortunes at the most important point in that election campaign.

Yeah, you can say it was only to assure the best possible outcome at a time when his State desperately needed Federal relief, so what? Christie helped convince a large number of the all-important "undecided" voters that maybe Obama wasn't Stalin and Hitler's lovechild, and, just maybe, voting for him might not be tantamount to treason. For doing that I will forgive him quite a bit.

but, I think Bill Clinton did more with his speech at the DNC. Joe Biden did a lot as well, with his beating Ryan in the debate after Obama did poorly in the first debate.

I think Nate Silver's analysis showed that momentum was already moving back to Obama before the hurricane as well.

However, if the Republicans had done just a little better in Ohio, they could have gone into election-stealing mode, and possibly taken both that State and the always easily stolen Florida. Christie was a big plus for President Obama when he needed the help most.

Forget it. We see who and what you are, Chris Christie, and if I have anything to do with deciding who is the next president, it won't be you.

I do not like to see anything posted on DU about Chris Christie. What an ugly, greedy, mean hog of a politician. Except that I should apologize to hogs because they are really much nicer than Chris Christie.

He was delivering a beat down and defending his state, and imparting a few facts to a libertarian asswipe and his entourage of mouth breathers. I think the term "donor states" is a nice touch, and I could care less if he gets credit for it--it's the truth.

It may have the side effect of charming independents who tend to vote the Democratic ticket, but real Democrats aren't that easily swayed.

I've paid "donor state" taxes all my life, even when I was out of country for years at a time. It's nice to see the point made that the people who yell the most contribute the least.

needs to be the mantra of every demo leader when one of the reps from a moocher state opens his/her mouth about how washington is bleeding them dry. Over and over again until it sticks and until the clueless are made aware of this.
