But the 7% figure is pure book-cooking. There are a lot more unemployed people than the official "percent unemployment" figure reported.

The estimates of the "real" figure vary widely, from 11% at the lowest to over 20% at the highest.

We could have "0% unemployment" tomorrow if the government just stopped paying anybody unemployment benefits altogether. (Hard to do in today's political climate, but rest assured that ALEC is working on it...)

He died penniless and no one found him (in Arizona) for 2 months. Would that justice were meted out so well in THESE situations, eh?.

Please, no condolences. I had reconciled my difficulties with him and forgiven him in therapy. I hadn't actually seen him in about 20 years when I found out. I did my best not to chuckle when I heard about it. It was, as they say, a fitting end to a waste of a life.

Jesus tells the story of the master that gave three of them a 'unit' of money.

1 invested with a tenfold return
2 invested with a fivefold return
3 buried his money

Master returns and takes the 'buried money' dude's unit and gives it to Mr. Tenfold return.

I'm pretty sure I read that in the gospel. Don't make me look it up. I may have paraphrased it just a tiny bit, but i believe that's the message. It's not really about money I'm told, but actually about doing something with Gods gifts (talents etc).

It's a very odd passage, especially this part:

24 “Then he that had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew thee, that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strewed.

25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth. Lo, there thou hast what is thine.’

26 His lord answered and said unto him, ‘Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strewed.

27 Thou ought therefore to have placed my money with the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with interest.

God wants you to be a wicked looter? Gotta wonder at the disciples some days.

is that two different disciples told the story very differently.

These two completely different passages (of the same story) is what makes it ok for conservatives to just make up shit to 'make a point'.

However, according to this kind of thinking Reagan's 'welfare queen' deserved not just the amount that she had bilked from the government, but she was deserving of the money that the wealthy have stored up in any non-interest bearing off-shore accounts.

You'd think the religious right would be behind this character that existed only in Reagan's imagination. Perhaps that's why you don't see them 'whipping out' these scriptures very often.

I can pick out sociopaths within minutes of speaking with them. It comes from living with one for too damn long. Anyway, the first time I met Skinner, I remember thinking, "Wow, he lives in DC but he doesn't appear to have any personality disorders, including sociopathy". I know that I put that in quotes but it's probably a paraphrase. Thoughts usually flit rather than narrate.

13. Working families with kids are 72 percent of all SNAP beneficiaries.
Mon Sep 23, 2013, 01:12 PM
Sep 2013

Just heard this guy being interviewed by Ed Schultz.

Just Picking On the Poor: The Facts and the Faces of Cutting SNAP
by Jim Wallis 09-19-2013 | 12:22pm

Today, the House of Representatives votes on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly food stamps. The proposal would cut SNAP by nearly $40 billion over the next 10 years. These cuts would hurt millions of people, namely seniors and the poorest among us. But it will most heavily affect low-income families with children where the parent(s) work for a living but don’t make enough to adequately feed their families. Working families with kids are 72 percent of all SNAP beneficiaries.

According to the Census Bureau, food stamps kept 4 million people out of poverty last year. The Congressional Budget Office reports that the House proposal would cut assistance to nearly 4 million low-income people in 2014 and an average of 3 million more each year for the next decade. Christian leaders across the evangelical, Catholic, Protestant, African-American, Hispanic, and Asian-American church spectrum are reacting with moral outrage at this assault on the people that Jesus specifically instructs us to protect
...................
Finally, for politicians to defend these SNAP cuts because of our need to cut spending in general is un-credible and incredible.

These same politicians are not willing to go to where the real money is: the Pentagon budget, which everyone knows to be the most wasteful in government spending, or the myriad subsidies to corporations, including agribusiness subsides to members of Congress who will be voting to cut SNAP for the poor.

Tea Party-elected Rep. Stephen Fincher, (R-Tenn.), who likes to bolster his anti-poor rhetoric with misused Bible verses, collected $3.5 million in farm subsidies between 1999 and 2012, according to the New York Times. Fincher is helping to lead the effort to cut food stamps to working families with children by illogically quoting: “The one who is unwilling to work should not eat,” all the while collecting millions of dollars in agricultural subsidies. Congressman Fincher's position is hypocritical — and it's this kind of hypocrisy that makes Christians look bad and turns young people away from the church.

You should be kicked out of Congress and made to live on food stamps for saying the disabled, elderly, and children should work to eat. You only work 126 days a year, so you should not eat for the other 230, pal.

Within 30 seconds it was deleted, he must have someone sitting there deleting every comment made.

Of the 126 days this Congress has "worked", they spent almost 1/3 of those days trying to repeal the ACA legislation and spewing lies in front of any microphone they could see. I'm sure they spent a few more trying to name post offices and a whole slew of things after their patron dead holy person, St. Ronald Reagan. They sure as hell wasted a lot of time filming lousy commercials that are shown repeatedly.

Unbelievable the spite some of our elected "leaders" show towards people in this country. Not talking about constituents...they don't have an ounce of compassion for another person as a living human being. You don't get any attention unless you can "make it rain" to their campaign PAC's or provide the sweetheart job once they leave public service.

All my people are from there. My father's family have all been Democrats since the first awful depression in the Farm Belt in the '20's. I agree with you about the metric ton...BUT, the state used to produce some pretty decent Democrats as well.
It always hurts when I read stuff like this. There was a point when even "conservative" Americans had a certain decency threshold. I'm afraid the Right-wingers have cornered the market in Convincing Lies and Bullshit.

Matthew 25

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

... that either one of those traits should be a disqualifier to elected office.

I don't think even a regular Republican voter would want someone in office who purposely seeks to starve children, the elderly, and the disabled; NOR should they want someone in office who is so blindingly ignorant of the way government programs operate and/or serve the people. Really -- if you're going to support or vote on the defunding of government programs, you should actually know what it is they do and who and how they serve the public. In other words: do your homework.

My congressman, Joe "You Lie" Wilson, is a classic example of that.

As for the "regular republican voter", they may not purposely seek to starve children, but they generally don't give a shit if those kids do starve, particularly if they are poor and/or a minority. A lot of them have this Dominionist mentality, which preaches that if your life is shitty, it's because you're a bad person, and deserve your shitty life, because God hates you.

"Pure religion and undefiled is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress."
James 1:26

"Come, you that are blessed by my Father, and enter my Kingdom! For I was hungry, and you gave me food: I was thirsty, and you gave me drink; I was a stranger, and you welcomed me; I was naked, and you gave me clothing; I was sick, and you cared for me; I was in prison, and you visited me. Truly, as you did it unto the least of these my brothers, you did it unto me."
Matthew 25:34 - 40

"What doth the Lord require of you, but to do justice, LOVE mercy, and walk humbly with your God?"
Micah 6:8

"What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the faces of the poor?"
Isaiah 3:15

"This was the sin of Sodom: She had her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy."
Esekiel 16:49

"Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms by injustice, who makes his neighbors work for nothing and does not give them their wages."
Jeremiah 22:13

"For the scripture says, You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain, and the Laborer is worthy of his pay."
Paul, in 1st Letter to Timothy, 5:18

"But the fruits of God's Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and SELF-control."
Paul, in Letter to Galatians, 5:2

These people think they have read the Bible, but they have mostly slid through most of it with blah blah blah in their minds, pausing to gather ammunition for the hatred that smolders always in their hearts, against anyone who dares to question the actions of their thieving ancestors in any detail, or to question their own right to further increase their already obscene store of riches by more and more redistribution of wealth out of the hands of those who labor to produce it into the hands of those who sit in air=conditioned offices devising wicked schemes against the poor and needy. And yes, the Bible also condemns that practice.

A: No. The First Amendment to the Constitution is clear on this and has been upheld by the Supreme Court. While I support full disclosure for candidate and direct contributions, what other organizations, liberal and conservative, do to promote their beliefs is up to them. Someone just told me there are hospitals with wings for brain dead people being kept on life support -- even dialysis. Medicare does this for three years. When the family has to start paying, they pull the plug. But not before. I think it is better to feed people who are really alive and pull the plug sooner on those really dead. The brain dead person doesn't know and they are not coming back. Set them free. Let others receive SNAP and be able to move forward.

They are devoid of compassion and empathy and seem to think if someone is poor, it's because they choose to be - that they lack drive and a solid work ethic.
