There's an employer that wants to induce people to take a job that may well leave them with long-term health problems. Accordingly, along with the pay and whatever other benefits are offered, the employer offers a plan for health care that continues past the end of the employment. This promise helps the employer compete with other prospective employers, many of whose jobs don't involve the same level of risk. This is just how the free market operates.
Yes, in this instance, the employer is the government. That doesn't make it socialism. Medicare, by contrast, is socialism. The ACA isn't full-out socialism but involves a redistribution of wealth, through the subsidies provided to low-income people.
Cruz is not being hypocritical in supporting veterans' benefits. He is, however, being hypocritical in not calling for the abolition of Medicare.
I will further defend Cruz to this extent: He really ought to be on the Republican ticket in 2016! Let them run Palin-Cruz or Cruz-West or some such and we'd be a lock to retake the House.
