TSoDS #6: Electrochemical Generation of Cometary Water
Ever since I was a kid, I have had a problem with the "Dirty Snowball" model of current cometary science. Having worked at a science museum for 14 years, I have had access to many of those in the fields surrounding this issue including Dr. Derick Pitts, with whom I had a number of engaging conversations on this subject prior to the "Deep Impact" mission. I even got to use a 10" refractor to study HaleBopp visually and spectroscopically. So when I heard Wal Thornhill's predictions in the lead-up to NASA's interception of Tempel-1, I paid attention.
I know that many here consider this line of investigation "Woo-Woo", or crack-pot psudo-science. But I find that hard evidence and live experiments trumps math-based conjecture every time. I am not discounting the role of solid mathematical equations, just those who add artificial complexity to old models when direct observation discredits their million character algorithms.
So, with that said, I offer a clear, and testable explanation of water production, not sublimation, from comets as a result of an electrochemical
reaction.
