(33,982 posts)the reality is, there's a lot of hungry kids out there.
The image is totally valid, totally on-message and effective, but I feel awkward finding it funny.
Like laughing at gallows humor in mixed company...
It's beautifully done though, really sticks it to Ryan as the heartless son of a bitch he is.

It has nothing to do with dignity. It NEVER HAS. I'd think a guy who sucked off the government teat his whole life would know that.

The middle class is being destroyed and the lower class has been attacked constantly, while every single policy in Congress it seems is aimed at that wonderful, job producing 1%. Something has got to give.

(140 posts)... for a morsel or two of food.
Ryan's problem, along that of many of his cohorts, is that he stumbled on an the (sophomoric) works of an author called Ayn Rand, mistook her message of "let the poor die" for sound economic philosophy and, since then, has been attempting to foist it on mainstream America. And gullible people have bought it, not realizing that the people he would eliminate from society are THEM.
I urge anyone who wants to understand Ryan's message to sit themselves down with friends and play a few games of Monopoly. At the end of the game, the money will be in the hands of one or two players and the rest will be out. This is a parallel for what is happening in America and in other countries that are "going conservative". Wealth and power are in the hands of a relative few while the rest of the people are suffering. The power people at the top will attempt to justify this in all sorts of ways, but the truth is that they are playing a game for fun, and they don't give a hoot who suffers. It's time for the rest of us to wake up.

(11,085 posts)You have to meet the physiological needs--food, water, air to breathe--before you can worry about the higher levels. Let's see, 2nd level is security, 3rd is friendship and belonging, 4th is self-esteem, 5th is full self-actualization. Dignity would definitely fit into the 4th level.
The point is a starving person ceases to worry about dignity or practically anything else except how to get some food. How many homeless people go dumpster diving behind restaurants hoping to find something edible?

(4,695 posts)in a work for food situation in a school or orphanage. Then the child will pay the state back by going into military service. The poor (and women) are livestock to the Cheney, Ryan, Gingrich and the rest of the GOP. (That's why the GOP laughs at Sarah Quitter ever time she brings her circus act to town.) Ryan reminds me of an opponent of Batman; one of the ruthless destroyers of civilization to get even with society for his childhood. Ryan has absolutely no appreciation for the working hands that fed him. And certainly no loyalty to the American democracy as he believes he did everything himself. Even his own daughter knew he was faking it at the Soup Kitchen stunt. VP Biden, had to laugh during the 2012 debates because humor can hold the place of sadness.

(18,672 posts)Not starving is dignity. Not living in squallor is dignity. Conservatives need to experience going hungry for a few days (I'm not talking about binging and purging, Republican women), but I suspect they would still be incapable of empathy.

In my opinion, Ryan, a coporationist person, wants to be a serial killer. He likes to hide in plain sight and get away with murdering America as a whole.

I don't know who I despise more--Ryan, Santorum, or Perry. Or McConnell. Or Boehner. Or Issa. Or Lindsay Graham. God, the list is endless.

(7,402 posts)What planet does Paul Ryan live on. Let him live just one month the "life of comfort" someone in poverty copes with. He would not be able to do it. Take away his car, his gym membership and put him in housing that a housing subsidy would permit. Let him sense and feel that life of comfort. Who knows, maybe he would like it so well that he couldn't give it up -- just like he claims others hang on to it.

(5,275 posts)It mystifies me how politicians can be so cold hearted, choosing to starve poor kids so as not to take a dime more tax from multi millionaires. The cold dark corporate state at work. The Republicans are evil, we know that, but the democratic party going back to Bubba have gotten in cahoots with Wall Street money at the expense of poor citizens. Hillary is also awash in Wall Street cash.
The classic joke that our last liberal president was Nixon has a lot of truth to it, sadly.
Somehow the national conversation has to change.
