(10,597 posts)... that made me sick! I hope nobody gets killed looking for the wreckage of that plane. How on earth can they find anything in rough waters? Thanks for the view of the Indian Ocean.

(2,148 posts)I was feeling a bit seasick just watching the video. Those are challenging conditions to work in, let alone keeping watch for airline crash evidence.

(70,447 posts)If you were the captain of that ship would you put your ship sideways between
the trough of those waves? Or having people go out on deck or along side the
ship to retrieve it?
Those swells have to be 50' or higher.

(14,007 posts)Seems like - since the search area is about the size of Alaska- they should stick to high res satellites...at least till the seas calm down.

(86,332 posts)Nope, I would never be able to handle being on board a ship in seas like that. Aside from the nausea, I would probably die of fright or have a coronary about every other wave!
Kudos to those who can do this. I agree that satellite imagery is about all that can be counted on as I suspect there aren't many days/nights when the seas in that area are calm enough to do anything of value.
But then, what about submarines? If this sea floor is so far down, why aren't there submersibles out there in the search?

(3,266 posts)breath just watching each wave approach!! I'd have a coronary, too. Totally in awe of those folks.
The other thing that struck me tho, was the amazing color of that water! Beautiful blue!

The video gives an incredible view into what it's like out there.

(3,163 posts)I've been through worse than that, where we were on the bridge and looking up at the tops of oncoming waves. We went over most of them, but not all. Some of them went over us. When we were down in the trough we were sheltered from the wind. When we got to the top of the wave the wind hit us like a truck.
A diesel submarine "rigged for surface" is all but unsinkable, far more durable than any surface ship. That doesn't mean it is confortable.
