Seventh round picks like Sam often get cut in preseason or get sent to the practice squad. He seems like a good person who just wants an opportunity to show what he can do.

Love who they love and succeed in whatever field they wish to pursue. That is Michael Sam's legacy, even if he never plays a single down in an actual game (although I doubt that'll happen).

For Sam, it's now hard to imagine a scenario that would have provided a better, more familiar set of surroundings, easing his transition to the NFL, than St. Louis. It's close to home, in a stadium he's played in before, and the Rams new defensive coordinator is Gregg Williams, whose signature move is to dial up a diverse and relentless blitz package that fits Sam's chase-the-ball skillset perfectly. It's what he did best as a Missouri Tiger.

------

Rams head coach Jeff Fisher has been in the league a long time and seen almost everything by now. He won't be afraid of this story, and his team won't crack from the glare of the spotlight it might bring. St. Louis finished last in the ultra-competitive NFC West last season, at 7-9, and there's an all-important season just ahead for the Rams in 2014. If Sam can help them win in any way, Fisher and his new teammates will treat him like they treat anyone who can deliver that reality. He'll be viewed as part of the solution, not part of the problem.
