A Unique Approach to Healing

The Canary Kids Project
Grassroots Initiative Tackles New Childhood Epidemics

by Beth Lambert

One of the greatest paradoxes of our times is that the most affluent, resourced and medically advanced societies in the world also have the highest rates of chronic childhood illness. Obesity and diabetes, autism and neurodevelopmental delays, and digestive and allergic diseases were rare just a generation ago. Today those illnesses are impacting our children in epidemic numbers, and the social, economic and human costs are staggering. Our children are the “canaries in the coal mine” of national health. For their sakes, we must take action now.

“The Fierce Urgency of Now”

Some startling statistics:

* Rates of autism have risen over the last few decades from 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 50 children. Autism costs the United States $126 billion per year.
* Asthma affects 1 in 8 children, and as many as 1 in 6 African American children. Asthma costs the United States $56 billion per year.
* One in 3 American children is either overweight or obese. Obesity-related medical costs account for $190 billion, or 21 percent of medical spending in the United States; childhood obesity carries a price tag of $14 billion a year in direct medical costs.
* One in 30 children is diagnosed with pediatric depression. The United States spends $83 billion a year on depression.
* Approximately 10 percent of American children have ADD/ADHD, and some 17 percent are labeled “learning disabled.” ADHD is estimated to cost the United States upwards of $100 billion per year.

There is a “fierce urgency of now” to take swift action to address this epidemic.

The Canary Kids Project

The Canary Kids Project (CKP) is an innovative, not-for-profit project aimed at identifying and addressing the individual issues at the root of this epidemic. The project tests and documents an integrative, results-oriented model of health care that takes a look upstream at the causes of chronic illness, rather than downstream at the symptoms.

There is a great deal of anecdotal evidence indicating that individuals with chronic conditions, even autism, can fully recover. The Canary Kids Project seeks to test and explore, through proper and rigorous scientific methodology, the underpinnings of these anecdotal successes.

Study documents that some children lose autism diagnosis

Small group with confirmed autism now on par with mainstream peers -- NIH-funded study

Some children who are accurately diagnosed in early childhood with autism lose the symptoms and the diagnosis as they grow older, a study supported by the National Institutes of Health has confirmed. The research team made the finding by carefully documenting a prior diagnosis of autism in a small group of school-age children and young adults with no current symptoms of the disorder.

The report is the first of a series that will probe more deeply into the nature of the change in these children's status. Having been diagnosed at one time with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), these young people now appear to be on par with typically developing peers. The study team is continuing to analyze data on changes in brain function in these children and whether they have subtle residual social deficits. The team is also reviewing records on the types of interventions the children received, and to what extent they may have played a role in the transition.

"Although the diagnosis of autism is not usually lost over time, the findings suggest that there is a very wide range of possible outcomes," said NIMH Director Thomas R. Insel, M.D. "For an individual child, the outcome may be knowable only with time and after some years of intervention. Subsequent reports from this study should tell us more about the nature of autism and the role of therapy and other factors in the long term outcome for these children."

The study, led by Deborah Fein, Ph.D., at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, recruited 34 optimal outcome children, who had received a diagnosis of autism in early life and were now reportedly functioning no differently than their mainstream peers. For comparison, the 34 children were matched by age, sex, and nonverbal IQ with 44 children with high-functioning autism, and 34 typically developing peers. Participants ranged in age from 8 to 21 years old.

What do we need today?

The Canary Kids Project has already raised $300,000 (100% donations!) and is nearing completion of Phase I of the Program (5 phases to completion). This money has come from people like you—friends and strangers who care about our children and our future.

This is our first of several fundraising drives. We are currently looking to raise $230,000 to complete Phase I and launch Phase II of the program.

Dear Friends of the Canary Kids Project,

We cannot thank you enough for all you have done to support this project and help us spread the word. Because of you, thousands of people have seen our videos and visited our website. And because of you we have raised over $27,000 for the Canary Kids Project since we launched the Indiegogo Campaign on May 24th. (While the Indiegogo site shows $10,300 raised, many more contributions have come in through our website and via checks). This money is critical at this juncture as it will help push Phase II of the program forward. Your generous donations will enable us to:

a) Bring our data collection and electronic health record system to life. Collecting data on the children enrolled in the program is how we plan to make the healing solutions inherent within the Canary Kids Project available to everyone

b) Prepare to upload our electronic application for program participants

c) Hire additional talent needed to ensure the quality and success of the program's completion

d) Continue to seek additional sources of funding so that we can get this project fully funded.

Even though this Indiegogo Campaign is technically closed (they make us do that!) we are still in fundraising mode, so if you have thoughts or ideas that might help us reach our fundraising goals, please email me, Beth Lambert at beth@canarykidsmovie.com. And please continue to share our project’s website http://www.canarykidsmovie.com where donations can be received at any time.

And please continue to spread the word!! Here is our awesome 3-minute video, that I think says it all! Share, Share, Share!!!

With Great Appreciation,

Beth Lambert

In 2014, CKP aims to enroll and support fourteen children (in five locations throughout the US) through a healing and recovery journey. The range of chronic illnesses will include autism, ADHD, asthma, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, mood disorders, obesity/type II diabetes, and atopic disease/eczema. Up to seven of these children will be featured in an eye-opening and groundbreaking feature-length documentary film, Canary Kids, that will spread the much-needed message of hope: Recovery Is Possible.
