I have never seen a hummingbird that close up. I think this is the first time I really understood how they got their name.

And the fearlessness around the human is astonishing, especially compared to the truly stupid swallows (I think that's what they are) who are my nesting pair this year.

I'll explain. As soon as I moved into my little house five years ago, a couple of swallows built a nest under the overhang in my front porch and raised a family. I think it might have been the same pair the next two years. Last year it was a different pair, I could tell. This year I have another different pair, and despite the fact that they should have been able to tell that the nest they took over was directly in front of a human's door, they absolutely panic every time I go in or out. Heck, they'll panic if they notice I'm at the kitchen window where I can watch them. Lucky for them I was away for ten days recently, and I'm soon going to be gone for two weeks, so they'll mostly get to raise their babies in peace. But really, these two are by far the stupidest birds who've ever used that nest.

Edited to correct bird type.

My next door neighbor is kind of like that. He had a hummer flying into the mist from his hose...
