I think the history would have been much like Canada's. We'd have gained independence over time through a series of political actions toward that end. We wouldn't have remained a British territory in the long run.

…the West would look substantively different and it is likely we would not reach the Pacific (maybe a corridor through Oregon, as there most certainly would not have been a "Washington" state). I agree with the other posters here that slavery would have ended sooner and that we would have eventually garnished our independence a la Canada. We probably would have had an affinity toward the Crown so entry into WWI and WWII would have likely have occurred (assuming the might of the British Empire wouldn't have squashed German expansion earlier), or, perhaps, new wars with Spain/Mexico.
