WTFU ...1

Sure those guys flew those airplanes into those buildings because they came from poor neighborhoods and hated the USA ...because we are rich ... WRONG

Reza and Ben are right in that every muslim is not an extremist but they are wrong in that extremism is not an extension of a violent religion ...

1. Sam Harris is correct as well...

Ben is a goof. I like him but he tends to be more emotion than intellectual. Reza was not being honest about Malaysia either...While non-Muslim women are governed under secular law Muslim women are subjected to Islamic law. The ole she must do exactly what her husband tells her , divorce is 100% up to the man, etc., NOT LIBERAL PRINCIPLES!!!

And the trend in Malaysia is not toward more secular laws but toward Islam...Strict Islam.

3. This short video covers some of the most powerful points about religion that I see.

The bombers are almost entirely focused on the paradise after they die. Not on some terrestrial grievance.

Even if they were motivated by a terrestrial grievance their solution wouldn't involve suicide without religious influence.

Finally the big one. It was said early in Sam's response. I paraphrase: Even the most casual of believers provide cover for the harmful fundamentalists. This is clear to anybody who is paying attention. I see it all the time in just interacting with people. The assumption that religious people are automatically trustworthy. The weight being openly religious gives to your non-religious claims among the religious.

The most insidious being those who insist that we can't challenge religious ideas. That they are privileged as "sincerely held beliefs" or some other nonsense. Bad ideas are bad ideas and they must be challenged.

4. "Even the most casual of believers provide cover for the harmful fundamentalists."

A key reason I loathe religion.

This is how priests have gotten away with their pedophilia for so long

It's how bigots get away with bigotry. Religion gives them cover

Love Sam. He is calm and intelligent

He made poor Ben Affleck look like an unhinged fool the other night. It was embarrassing for Ben, who is usually very informed

5. I got a question

I get into a lot of debates with Sam Harris supporters.
There's something I just can't agree with and maybe you can help me out.

If you go with his proposition that islam is basicly the main source of evil in the world and even though out of billions of muslims are not terrorist they are as guilty as the terrorist for having the same religion.

¨Harris draws an interesting parallel between the abrahamic religions and nazism:
While Hitler and most of the nazi military tortured and killed innocent people, the vast majority of nazi supporters were civilians who took no part in the actual torture and killings, yet they are just as guilty by supporting the basic tenets of the nazi philosophy.
So while the KKK and the Taliban torture(d) and kill(ed) innocent people, the vast majority of christians and muslims take no part in the actual torture and killings, yet they are just as guilty by supporting the basic tenets of the islam/christianity.¨

Basicly your guilty by association because of what you believe in.

If you take this proposition as real, what's the solution?

Since Sam Harris basicly said it's ok to bomb muslims countries because they breed islam and terrorist, I don't get the difference with a terrorist who believes the west is the source of evil for the world.

Thanks !

6. "If you take this proposition as real, what's the solution?"

I know someone who will say it'll all work out when Jesus comes back.

Then everyone will be given the choice to follow Him or die.

Keeping in mind the anti-Christ will come first and will trick billions into following him. Those people will be damned as well.

Oh, and Obama is the anti-Christ but I supported Kucinich so I'm okay.

9. The solution would be to move beyond oil...

Then we would stop providing cover for the Saudis who claim to be actual Holy Men.

11. I agree

So to me it's not religion. It's the monarchy and the saudis.

But I live in Canada and our prime minister loooooooooooooooooooove oil and hates Islam.

Keeping the debate on debating Islam is evil ain't hhelping us getting beyond oil....

15. We care so little about their religion that most Americans never even HEARD of Islam until 9/11...

Those that did knew it as a religion that is so against killing that it got Muhammad Ali out of Vietnam.

8. "Basicly your guilty by association because of what you believe in."

This is obviously true.

Religious is delusion and fraud. It needs to go away and not be tolerated, just like most decent people no longer tolerate the KKK. It's still there but we just point and laugh
